I'm researching the African-American family of JAMES K. AND ANNIE H. JOHNSON. The federal census places them in Covington, Newton County in 1900 and 1910. Their dates of birth were approx. Dec., 1861 (James K.) and May., 1965 (Annie). They lived on a farm near the Yellow River. Their son, William, married into the Epps family. Their son, Ulysses married into the Gaither family. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

Othniel WEAVER (my GGGGGF) was born about 1750 in Anson or Bladen, NC and his property on Hill's Creek eventually ended up in present day Chesterfield County, SC (previously Craven, Cheraw and St. David’s districts) before 1784. He removed to the Little River area of Wilkes County, GA by 1787 and was a member of Phillips Mill Baptist Church. He was recorded at various times in Washington, Baldwin and Wilkinson counties before settling in Morgan where he died in 1817. Othniel was a pioneer Baptist preacher in early Georgia history along with his step son-in-law, Jesse Mercer and many other Weaver relatives. Family tradition holds that his parents were Aaron and Hannah Weaver, who were killed by Bloody Bill Cunningham in the Massacre at Cloud's Creek in Edgefield County, SC in November 1781. He married first, Sarah HOLLEY the widow of Joel CHIVERS about 1783 in Chesterfield, SC, who had these CHIVERS children: Thomas 1768, Joel 1770, Larkin 1771, Sabrina 1772, Jane 1774 and Jamimah 1776. Together Othniel and Susannah had these WEAVER children: Jesse 1808, James 1809, Nancy 1810 and Isaac Suttles 1812 (my GGGGF). These children married into many of the early Georgia families in and around Wilkes County, GA. FICQUETT, HOUSE, HUDSON, SIGMAN, WELLS, WRIGHT posted by Janet Wells on Saturday, March 24, 2001

The following information was copied, in part, from a family Bible, and some of it is supported by census and other records. I am interested in being contacted by people who have additional information about these Newton County families. Rufus W. Hudson Born 12 Feb 1826 Ellis B. Hudson Born 21 May 1827 Sarah G. Hudson Born 29 Nov 1828 Martha A. Hudson Born 9 May 1831 Harriett Hudson, b. January 8, 1800, d. May 5, 1883. Harriett married Joseph Wells Nov. 3, 1840. She may have been the widow of David Hudson (died about 1837?)at the time she married Joseph Wells, in which case Rufus, Ellis, Sarah and Martha Hudson were probably her children from her first marriage. A descendant of Rufus Hudson informs me that a Harriett Wright married a David Hudson April 8, 1825, in Newton County. Harriett and Joseph Wells had three children. Emerett Selena Wells, b. Oct. 30, 1841; Iverson Vestal Wells, b. Sept. 11, 1843, and Barbery Mariner Wells, b. March 4, 1845, d. May 26, 1857. An Iverson V. Wells is shown in Confederate war records as serving in the 42nd Infantry, Co. F. Emerett Wells married Gus P. Sigman July 20, 1865. Among their children were Della Tallulah Sigman (my grandmother), who was born Nov. 22, 1872 and d. April 22, 1954. She married a Mr. Ficquett and after his death, Benjamin Franklin Wells Sr., her cousin. Other children of Gus and Emerett Wells Sigman were Mary Elizabeth Sigman (House), b. June 19, 1866, d. Jan. 15, 1954; twins Marcus Franklin Sigman and Martha Savannah Sigman, b. May 22, 1869 (Martha d. Nov. 27, 1869); Charles Wynn Sigman, b. March 6, 1871, and Harriett Sigman, b. Feb. 25, 1875. The Wells and Sigman families are buried at Bethel Christian Church cemetery near Conyers.
