Land & Deeds

Please refer to the in-depth discussion of Land Records in the LDS Research Outline for many of the details about Land Records and their availability.  Original sale of land was done either by a Federal land grant or a State Land Grant.  States which administered original land sales are called state-lands states, and include the original 13 colonies (including Georgia), Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Hawaii.

Since statehood, subsequent transfers of land between private owners have been recorded by the local Clerk of Court - Probate Judge in each county.
