Pierce County was created 18 Dec 1857 from Appling and Ware Counties with land that was originally held by the Creek Indians.  The Creek were expelled

from their territory by General David Blackshear under orders from the US Government after the start of the War of 1812.

The county seat of Blackshear was named by the State Legislature before the torn was created.  Blackshear was built around a train depot which was built in 1857 by

 the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad.

The first courthouse was built in 1858 in Blackshear.  It burned 11 March 1875 destroying almost all records in the courthouse.  A new court house was built to

replace it, which was replaced in 1902 by the current courthouse.

The County had a temporary Confederate prisoner of war camp built to house nearly 5,000 Union captives to prevent their release by General William T

Sherman as he marched through the state.

Parts of Pierce County were given to help form Bacon County in 1914 and portions to give to Brantley County in 1920.
