Blackshear Civil War Prison Camp for Union Prisoners
It was an open camp in an out of way place, surrounded by a guard line, including some heavy artillery pieces. The prison guards were mostly from the
2nd Georgia Reserve Regiment.
During November in 1864, about 5,000 Union Soldiers began arriving by rail along the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad into Blackshear. Many of these prisoners were
evacuated from a number of POW camps in other parts of Georgia which were in the way of General Sherman's push towards the coast.
The first allotment of prisoners was about 600 from the Millen POW camp, which came from Savannah by railroad. The trains kept bringing prisoners until the
population of the Blackshear prison reach about 5,000.
By the beginning of 1865 the prisoners and their guards moved on northward into South Carolina or into the prison camp in Thomasville.
