Served with the 13th Georgia Regiment, part of the Atlantic and Gulf Guard. He was in Company F, a Private. He was in Chimborazo Hospital #1 for "debility" from Sept 3, 1862 through Sept 9, 1862. John Stephens was discharged 17 Jan 1863.

He is shown in the 1860 census in Blackshear as a merchant living with wife Jane (aged 30),
