Dr Nathaniel Edward Walker, a physician of Putnam Co who served in the 44th Georgia Regiment of the Confederacy. It is said that he was the only Dr to dress a wound of General Robert E Lee.

In 1861 Putnam Brown Rifles were organized and would become part of Co B of the 3rd Regt of GA Infantry. Putnam Light Infantry joins
Company G of the 12th Regt of Georgia Infantry Volunteers in 1861. Forty one Putnam boys, all under 15 years of age formed the Eatonton Light Guards and joined the 27th Georgia Battalion in 1862.
