CIVIL WAR RESEARCH (04/06/00)
Greetings: I am compiling information for a book entitled: "Bibliography of Civil War Manuscripts in the state of Georgia." This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state. Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all. I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Randolph County. The task involves visiting or calling the Randolph County Library and historical Society to check and see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries. After that a brief description of the item is all I need. In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two. All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book. This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation. If you would like to help me, please contact me.

    DAVIS / HAY (04/29/00)
Is there anyone that can give insight on this family? William W. HAY was born about 1843 in Georgia. He was in the civil war. He married Lucy (Lousianna) DAVIS. She was the daughter of Elisha DAVIS and Lutitia McLeod DAVIS. William and Lucy were married about 1861 probably in Webster, Randolph, Stewart, or Terrell County, Georgia. They were listed on the 1870 Webster County census. In 1880 they had moved to Henry County, Alabama. William got a land there in 1883. He apparently died shortly after. Each time he was listed as "HAY". However, the next time I found the family, they were in Santa Rosa County, Florida, on the 1885 state census. They were listed as follows:
    • Lucy D. HAYS born 1845 in Georgia (widow)
    • William S. HAYS born 1862 in Georgia
    • Alice Hays HAYS 1868 in Georgia
    • Sidney Hiram HAYS born 1869 in Georgia
    • Jeff HAYS born 1871 in Georgia
    • Martin HAYS born 1873 in Georgia
    • Berry HAYS born 1876 in Georgia
    • Josephine HAYS born 1878 in Georgia
    • Nettie HAYS born 1880 in Georgia

They also had a sister that was married by the time of the census: Letitia HAY(S) born 1864 in Georgia had married Burrie Clifton LASSITER in Henry County, Alabama, on January 20, 1880. They were living in Santa Rosa County as well.

Lucy married Thomas HOPPER in Santa Rosa County and died soon after.

My g-grandfather was Sidney Hiram HAYS. The family changed the spelling to HAYES. He married Bettie BOOKER in 1893 in Santa Rosa County, Florida. They had the following children:
    • Nettie HAYES born 1896 - died 1982
    • Sidney Martin HAYES born 1897 - died 1971
    • Gertrude HAYES born 1902 - died 1971
    • Harry Fredrick HAYES born 1904 - died 1982
    • Marshall Rufus HAYES born 1905 - died 1971
    • Newton HAYES born 1907 - died 1976

Sidney and Bettie had an adopted Indian son named Riley HAYES born 1889 and died after 1920 probably in Monroe County, Alabama.

Sidney Martin HAYES was my grandfather.

Here are some questions that I need help on: What happened to the following siblings: William S. Jefferson Berry (probably Asberry) Josephine and Nettie?

Letitia lived the rest of her life in Santa Rosa County, Florida.

Alice married Richard AMOS and lived the rest of her life in Santa Rosa.

Sidney Hiram died in Santa Rosa.

Martin HAYES was supposed to have become a Pinkerton Agent. I've been told that Berry went to Louisiana and Jeff went to Birmingham, Alabama. Nettie may have gone to Seattle, Washington. I have no clue as to what happened to Josephine or William S.

Who were the parents of William W. HAY? Who were his siblings?

I believe that Martin HAY may have been his father since the name Martin is repeated in the lineage. Seaborn may have been his father. Can anyone help or give an educated guess? Does anyone have a guess to way the family changed there name? Any bit of information on the above would be helpful!!!!!

    Thanks in advance.

He was married to Mary GRIER (b 1812 d 1888, buried in Randolph County). Mary GRIER JENKINS bore at least seven children, including my great grandfather, William Leroy JENKINS. She bore five children, Ralph WATKINS JENKINS, Madge WATKINS JENKINS, Oliver WATKINS JENKINS (my father), Jamie WATKINS JENKINS and Charlie WATKINS JENKINS. My grandmother said they were just as much her children as they were Dr JENKINS'. I need proof of the parentage of Leroy JENKINS. While going through the 1840 Randolph County, GA Cenus Report looking for more info on my Josiah PAGE and Bersheba PHELPS line, I found what I'm pretty sure is my BROWN line. I'm missing a generation to correct, but the unusal names are the same and Randolph isn't far from where I pick them up in later census reports. If anyone has ANY info on these BROWNs (I've given approximate birth years) or their descedants please contact me. They aren't in the 1830 or 1850 census for Randolph, only the 1840. Thanks. Bill
