Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 8
from Hamp Stevens United Methodist Church for Douglas Eugene Davis, 66, of
Columbus, who passed away Thursday, July 6 home. Burial was in Riverdale
Cemetery.
Mr. Davis was born August 24, 1922, in Stewart County,
son of Mr. and Mrs. William Allen Davis. He was a member of Hamp Stevens
United Methodist Church and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He was
a member of Rosehill Masonic Lodge and a member of Columbus/Fort Benning
Shrine Club.
Survivors include a son, William Jerome Davis of Columbus;
four sisters, Mary Money and Willie Bundrick, both of Columbus, Vera Whitten
of Midland, and Ella Pearl Pope of Macon; two grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Vance Memorial Chapel of Columbus was in charge of the
arrangements.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 10
from New Hope Baptist Church in Preston for John Henry Jordan, 46, of East
Hartford, Conn., who passed away Saturday, July 1 at Manchester Memorial
Hospital in Manchester, Conn. Burial was in Parker Cemetery.
Mr. Jordan was born May 8, 1943, in Webster County, son
of Lillia R. and Henry Jordan. He had lived in Connecticut for the past 24
years.
Survivors, other than his mother, include his wife, Joan;
three sisters, Mildred McDaniel and Rosemary Miles, both of East Hartford
and Maxine Holloway of Richland; a son, Tiewand Averett of Richland; two
daughters, Annette Harrell of Preston and Riqui Barnes of Atlanta; two
stepdaughters and one step-son, all of Hartford, Conn.; and two grandsons
of Preston.

Richland friends were deeply saddened Monday to learn
of the passing of Thomas Miller, who died Saturday in Warner Robins after
a long illness. He was buried in Richland at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday. Thomas was
born and raised in Richland. He was the son of the late William B. and Mattie
Miller and grandson of the late Dr. B. T. Miller. (*July 8, 1989 - Sat. July

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July
15 from Mount Olive Baptist Church for Mrs. Eldora T. Callaway, 93, of Lumpkin,
who passed away Friday, July 7 at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany. Burial
was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Callaway was born September 8, 1895, in Webster
County, daughter of Henry and Savannah Tiggett. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Henry Callaway of Lumpkin
and Coley C. Callaway of Dawson; four daughters, Effie Callaway, Alma Berry
and Mildred Gibson, all of Cincinnati, and Eva Johnson of Albany; a sister,
Cary Hollomon of New Jersey; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and
a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Velinda T. Jones, 39, were held
Saturday, JUne 17, 1989 at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Mark A.M.E. Church,
Lumpkin, with Rev. Vernon Lloyd officiating.
Mrs. Jones was born April 20, 1950 in Stewart County,
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thomas, Jr. She passed away June 12 in
Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
She was a member of Stephen Chapel A.M.E. Church. She
was a strong believer in Christ. Due to her illness she attended church whenever
she could. She was loved by her family, friends, neighbors, and all who knew
her.
She graduated from Lumpkin Elementary High School and
completed her education at Albany State College, receiving a B. A. degree
in Education. She taught school for several years until illness rendered
her unable. She served well and loved her work.
Survivors include a husband, Mr. Curtis Jones; two daughters,
Kirsten and Keneshay Jones of Albany; parents, Albert and Trudie Thomas of
Lumpkin; two grandmothers, Mrs. Flossie Baldwin of Lumpkin, and Mrs. Odessa
Thomas of Atlanta; three sisters, Mrs. Shirley Baldwin and Mrs. Sharon Andrews
of Albany, and Mrs. Sandra Johnson of Lumpkin; six brothers, Calvin, James,
Alfred, and Dennis Thomas of Albany, Aubrey Thomas of Decatur and one brother
who preceded her in death, Larry Thomas; a mother-in-law, Mrs. Herneretta
Spivey of Camilla; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Howard "Hotshot" Moses, 69, of Columbus, passed away
Tuesday, July 18 at St. Francis Hospital.
Mr. Moses was born June 22, 1920, in Stewart County,
son of Howard and Olivia Moses. He had lived in Columbus most of his life,
was a construction worker, and was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist
Church.
Survivors include a son, Howard Moses, III of Birmingham,
Ala.; a daughter, Patricia Delige of New York City; two sisters, Willie Bell
Hardy of Cleveland and Ella Mae Green of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July
19 from St. Mark AME Church in Lumpkin for Mrs. Bertha Mae Threats of Valdosta
who passed away Wednesday, July 12 at her home. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Threats was born in Jackson, Tenn., daughter of
Isaac and Georgia Staten. She was a member of St. Mark AME Church and its
Junior Choir, a graduate of Lumpkin High and Industrial School, and the widow
of Solomon Threats.
Survivors, other than her mother, include two brothers,
Tommy Lee Staten of Lumpkin and Willie Clark Staten of San Antonio, Texas;
a niece and a nephew.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 23
from Antioch Baptist church for Miss Emma Jean Murray, 48, of Columbus, who
passed away Thursday, July 20 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus. Burial
was in Green Acres Cemetery.
Miss Murray was born Jan. 22, 1941, in Stewart County,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Murray. She worked for Sunshine Biscuit Co.
and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors, other than her father, include a daughter,
Trivisa Murray of Columbus; three sisters, Gail Harris of Columbus, Betty
Jo Murray of Bainbridge, and Diane Murray of Springfield, Mass.; a brother,
James Murray of Columbus.

Mrs. Henrietta Richardson Williams, 80, of Columbus,
passed away Monday, July 24 at her home.
Mrs. Williams was born Jan. 4, 1909, in Stewart County,
daughter of Porter James and Fannie Berry Richardson. She was a member of
Holsey Chapel CME Church, Columbus, and the International Benevolent
Society.
Survivors include three sisters, Nannie Newkirk and Katie
Brown, both of Columbus; and Annie Alexander of Lumpkin.

The funeral service for Mrs. Lillian Fowler Bankston,
47, of Donalsonville was held at Spring Creek Baptist Church on Friday, July
14 at 3 p.m. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bankston, a native of Pensacola, Florida, had resided
in Donalsonville for the past four years. She was a former employee of Citizens
and Southern Bank in Bainbridge and was a member of the Alders Gate Methodist
Church in Shelby, N. C.
Survivors include her husband, R. V. (Bobby) Bankston
of Donalsonville; a daughter, Mrs. Jamie Taylor and son-in-law, Earl Taylor
of Wetumpka, Alabama; a son, Hank Albritton of Atlanta; parents, Mr. and
Mrs. James Fowler of Montgomery, Alabama; two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Hopkins
and Mrs. Mary Eleanor Jefcoat, both of Montgomery, Alabama; a step-daughter
and a step-son and several nieces and nephews.
She was the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vernon
Bankston of Albany.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Rex Henderson,
pastor of Spring Creek Baptist Church, and Dr. Padgett Cope of Birmingham,
Alabama, uncle of Mrs. Bankston. Varner Rushton, Jr., cousin of Mrs. Bankston
was pianist and Ricky Thursby of Donalsonville sang "How Great Thou Art,"
and "Amazing Grace." Mr. Rushton played "I Am Bound For The Promised Land."
Pallbearers were Calvin Rushton, Lewis Carter, Jr., R.
V. Bankston, Sr., Jackie Williams, Jay Trice and Tommy Dick.
A memorial service was held on July 16 at McGee Road
Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama for Mrs. Lillian Bankston. Rev. Neil
Hughes officiated.

Vol. 116 Issue 30, page 2 - Mrs. Anna Melle LaBell
Mrs. Anna Melle Moore LaBell, 78, of Oxnard, California,
died Thursday, July 20 in Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California,
after an extended illness.
A native of Chattahoochee County, she was born January
8, 1911, daughter of the late R. D. Moore and Dora Bray Moore, longtime residents
of Richland.
Mrs. LaBell was former owner and operator of the Tri-City
Cleaners of Phenix City and Columbus. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. LaBell is remembered with kindest regard and admiration
by many Richland and area friends who were deeply saddened at her fatal illness
and death.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond LaBell of Oxnard;
two daughters, Mrs. Dora Walkins of Woodland Hills, California, and Mrs.
Mary Robertson of Canoga Park, California; three brothers, H. L. Moore, Sr.
and Grady Moore, both of Richland, and Walter C. Moore of Barnesville; one
sister, Mrs. Charles Jenkins of Columbus; several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, also nieces and nephews, including Mrs. John Eakes,
H. L. (Buster) Moore, Jr. and George Moore of Richland.
Graveside funeral rites were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in
Harmony Cemetery in Richland where interment was made. The Rev. Jack Ray,
pastor of the Lumpkin First Baptist Church, conducted the service.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 17
from St. Mark AME Church for Mrs. Lilla M. Murdock, 78, of Lumpkin, who passed
away Saturday, July 22 at Doctors Hospital in Columbus. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. Murdock was born Oct. 22, 1910, in Lumpkin, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Lemon Moses. She was a retired insurance agent and a member
of St. Mark AME Church, where she served as a missionary worker and a stewardess.
She was the widow of Fred Murdock, Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. James R. Edwards;
a son, retired Staff Sgt. Fred Murdock, Jr., both of Columbus; a brother,
Albert Moses of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.

arrangements.
Vol. 116 Issue 31, page 2 - Mrs. Marcelle Reed
Mrs. Anna Marcelle Tenant Reed, 79, widow of retired
Army Sergeant Ramon Reed, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 27, at her home.
She reportedly suffered a heat stroke.
She was born August 1, 1909 in Washington County,
Pennsylvania, daughter of the late John George and Annie Hartman Tenant.
She lived in Florida before her marriage to Sgt. Reed and had lived in Richland
a number of years. Mr. Reed died in December of 1982.
She had become acquainted with many neighbors and friends
in this vicinity, and was known to be of a sunny disposition, and friendly
person.
Survivors include one son, Charleton Brank of Richland
and his wife, Mildred; two brothers, Dennis and Jimmy Tenant of Detroit,
Mich.; one sister, Elizabeth Young of Royal Oak, Michigan; and several nieces
and nephews.
The funeral service was held Sunday, July 30 at the graveside
in Harmony Cemetery with Rev. Jack Ray, pastor of the Lumpkin First Baptist
Church, conducting the last rites.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 7
from St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Columbus for Leroy Armour, 91,
of Columbus, who passed away Tuesday, August 1. Burial was in Armour Cemetery
in Louvale.
Mr. Armour was born March 5, 1898, in Stewart County,
son of Walter B. and Mary Alice Armour. He was retired from the Central of
Georgia Railroad.
Survivors include a sister, Maybelle Irvin of Lumpkin;
and a brother, Benjamin J. Armour of Matawan, N.J.
William T. Ford Mortuary of Columbus was in charge of
the arrangements.
Vol. 116 Issue 32, page 4 - Mrs. Kathleen Barnes
Mrs. Kathleen Orr Barnes, 83, of Americus, died in Oak
Ridge Nursing Home on July 25, after a lengthy illness.
A native of Richland, she was the daughter of the late
John Franklin Orr, and Lizzie Beth Parker Orr, who lived for many years in
the Randall Crossing Community near Richland. She attended school in Richland
and was graduated from Richland High School. She, with the Orr family were
members and regular attendants of the Richland First Baptist Church.
Kathleen married Horace E. Barnes of Americus, and the
couple made Americus their home. She moved her church membership to the Central
Baptist Church in Americus where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher.
She was regarded as a consecrated Christian as she was a Bible student and
she loved people and never forgot a friend. Her good works throughout the
years and her kind and generous disposition as a resident of this vicinity
will long be remembered.
She was a resident of Plains Convalescent Home at Plains
for several years before being transferred to Oak Ridge Tennessee, where
she resided for about four months.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Snider of Oak
Ridge; a son, Joe Barnes of Macon; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Donald Orr of Richland is a sister-in
-law.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 28, at 2 p.m.
from Harvey's Rees Park Chapel with Rev. Melvin York officiating. Burial
followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers were Mickey Holloway, Julian Smith,
Freddie Snider, Watson Turner, Lyn Perry and Alfred Dupree.

Vol. 116 Issue 33, page 2 - Mrs. Edith Campbell
Mrs. Edith Hodges Campbell, 74, of St. Mary's, Georgia,
and prominent and highly esteemed former resident of Richland, died Monday,
August 7, at her home after a lengthy illness. She had been in declining
health for about a year.
Born July 17, 1915, in Oconee, Georgia, she was the daughter
of the late Charles Marshel Hodges and Berta Moye Hodges. She married Stewart
Hudson Campbell, June 20, 1939, soon after his graduation from Gupton-Jones
Mortician School. The couple lived in Plains and one or more localities before
moving to Richland in 1945. Mr. Campbell served as funeral director here
for thirty-one years, and the couple and their two daughters were outstanding
leaders in church and community life. After selling out his interest in the
local funeral home, Mr. Campbell became State Director of Georgia Funeral
Directors Association, and because of health problems, his wife accompanied
and drove the car on every trip. He retired in 1976.
The couple moved to St. Mary's years ago.
Mrs. Campbell, who as affectionately called "Edith" was
a member of the First United Methodist Church in Richland, and was actively
affiliated with its organizations. She also was active in social life and
hosted many parties for brides-elect and other social functions. She and
Mr. Campbell celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1979, and were
honored at a lovely reception. She was always helpful, always friendly and
always "smiling through." Her glowing personality and beauty of face and
character attracted many friends who were deeply reluctant at her fatal illness
and death. She was endeared to a host of friends throughout this section
and in St. Mary's where she was known.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August
9 at Antioch Christian Church in Oconee, with the Rev. Harold Brinson of
Brunswick, conducting the rites, and paying a beautiful tribute.
Interment was in Antioch Christian Church cemetery with
E. K. May Funeral Home of Tennille in charge of arrangements.
Survivors, besides her husband, Stewart H. Campbell of
St. Mary's, is one daughter, Mrs. Earl (Carol) Smith of St. Mary's; two
granddaughters, Joane and Jennifer Smith, both of St. Mary's. One daughter,
Joane Campbell died in 1955 at the age of 15 years. Two or more brothers
and one or more sisters preceded her to the grave.
Attending the funeral from Richland were Mr. and Mrs.
Love Kimbrough, and their daughter, Mrs. Gay Kimbrough Stephens of Prattsville,
Alabama; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lee and Mrs. Jimmy (Helen) Blanton.

Glen Owen (G.O.) Bailey, 89, of Tifton died Saturday,
August 5 at Tift Health Care.
Services were held August 7 in Memorial Chapel of First
Baptist Church in Tifton with Rev. Ches W. Smith III and the Rev. Paul Thomas
officiating. Interment followed at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton.
Pallbearers include Dr. Otha Hale, Dr. W.O. Hughes, H.
C. Medford, W. A. Martin, Jack Albott, Cecil Adair, Dr. Sammie Polles, w.
G. Massey, Morgan Green, Mack Sumner and Kenny Martin. Honorary pallbearers
include deacons of First Baptist Church and members of the Mens Bible
Class.
Born July 2, 1900, in Turin, he was a retired school
teacher and formerly was Tift County School superintendent for 27 years.
He was widower of Mary Hazel Humber Bailey, native of Lumpkin, the son of
the late Glen Owen Bailey and Ida Johnson Bailey and a member of Tifton's
First Baptist Church. He was a deacon of the church and taught Sunday School
for 59 years. He served in the Tift County school system for 37 years, was
a member of the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and
the Tift County Red Cross Board. He was also Dean of Norman Park College.
Survivors include one son, Herbert Humber Bailey of Mobile,
Alabama; one daughter, Holly Hall of Tifton; two sisters, Mrs. A. C. Russell
and Mildred Holly Bailey, both of Newnan; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one
sister.

Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla., for Frank M. Streetman, 87, of New Port Richey,
Fla., who passed away Saturday, August 5, at his home.
Mr. Streetman was born February 2, 1902, in Richland,
son of Marcus s. and alice Middleton Streetman. He had lived in New Port
Richey most of his life, was retired as manager for Western Union, and later
was a real estate broker. He was the widower of Myra Quina Streetman. Survivors
include a son, Mark Streetman of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Jane
S. Bowes of Lakeland, Fla, and Rita S. Hill of New Port Richey; a sister,
Mary S. Ball; two brothers, Dan G. Streetman and Clark H. Streetman, all
of Columbus; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Robert L. McKenney, Sr., of Marietta, a retired Air
Force master sergeant and veteran of World War II, died Saturday, August
12, of cancer at Kennestone Hospital. He was 75.
The funeral was held August 15 at Our Savior Lutheran
Church in Smyrna with burial at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta.
Mr. McKenney, a native of Colquitt, was in the Air Force
for 22 years. After retiring from service he and his family settled in Smyrna.
He became affiliated with Georgia Casualty and Surety Company in Atlanta.
After being with the company 26 years, he retired last year at age 74. He
was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Anita Kotts McKenney; a daughter,
Kristine Holton of Marietta; three sons, Robert McKenney, Jr. of Marietta,
James McKenney of Acworth, and Richard McKenney of Powder Springs; a sister,,
Betty McKenney of Richland; three brothers, Willie McKenney of Richland and
Wallace McKenney and Ernest of McKenney, both of Colquitt; and three
grandchildren.

Mrs. cleveland was born September 16, 1890, in Stewart

Beverly Diane Bryant, a sixteen-year-old teenager, of
Preston, died instantly Thursday evening in an automobile accident which
occurred several miles outside of Richland. The driver lost control of the
car when it hit a bump on a dirt road.
Beverly was born November 30, 1972 in Sumter County,
daughter of Mrs. Mary Grace Moore Sizemore, of Preston, and Robert Cleveland
Bryant, of Smithville. She was a sophomore at Tri-County High School in Marion
County, and was a popular member of the younger contingent. Her accident
was a sad tragedy and many friends are grief-stricken over the loss of this
popular student.
Survivors, besides her parents, are four sisters, Lisa
and Mandy Sizemore and Tina Moore, all of Preston, and Tiffany Bryant of
Smithville; paternal grandparents, J. C. Bryant of Barnesville and Mrs. Martha
Pratt of Leesburg; maternal grandfather, Mancy Moore of Preston; paternal
step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Sizemore of Preston.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August
26 in the Preston Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
The Reverend J. Glen Spivey of Enterprise, Alabama conducted
the last rites.
Vol. 116 Issue 35, page 2 - Mrs. Lydie Grimsley
Mrs. Lydie Brooks Grimsley, 71, prominent and esteemed
citizen of Weston, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 13, when enroute
to Cuthbert to see her doctor. They had stopped at her daughter's home to
make a hurried call for a doctor's appointment, and she passed out in the
car, according to report.
Mrs. Grimsley was born June 12, 1918 in Webster County,
daughter of the late Charlie Monroe Brooks and Fannie Goare Brooks. She grew
up in the Weston community and married Gordon Grimsley February 27, 1941,
and the couple made their home in Weston.
She was a member of the Weston Baptist Church, and a
charter member of Weston Woman's Club. She was a dedicated homemaker and
a devoted wife and mother. She was also a good neighbor and a friend to all.
Her sudden passing was a grievous shock to Weston and surrounding communities.
Many friends will long cherish sweet memories of this fair lady.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon Grimsley; one son,
Richard Grimsley of Weston; two daughters, Mrs. Angelyn West of Weston, and
Mrs. Rite Finlayson of Albany; one sister, Mrs. Annibel Brightwell of Americus;
seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August
5 at the Weston Baptist Church with Rev. Leighton Norris, pastor, and the
Rev. W. G. Stallings, former pastor, conducting the rites. Mrs. Dorothy Wheeler
was pianist, and Amy Black was soloist in singing "To God Be The Glory."
Interment was in the Weston Baptist Church Cemetery with
L. B. Smith Funeral Home of Richland in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Dewey Brooks, Wade Brightwell, Walter
Guy Spann, Charles Brooks, Ray Payne, Chris Jones, Raymond Goodwin, and Dr.
Larry Brightwell.

William L. Taylor, 69, of Cusseta, died August 26, 1989
in Doctors Hospital in Columbus after a short illness. Funeral services were
held Tuesday, August 29, 1989 from Cusseta United Methodist Church with Rev.
Robert McDaniel and Rev. Tommy Parsons officiating. Interment was in Mt.
Olive Cemetery.
Mr. Taylor was born August 2, 1920 in Chattahoochee County,
son of the late W. L. and Inez Culpepper Taylor. He was a member of Cusseta
United Methodist Church, served eight years on the Chattahoochee County Board
of Education and twelve years as County Commissioner of Chattahoochee County,
the last two years as chairman.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille W. Taylor, Cusseta;
one son, William L. Taylor, Jr., Cusseta; one daughter, Jo Ann Wiener, Cusseta;
one brother, Aaron Taylor, Buena Vista; four sisters, Mrs. Mamie Wiseman,
Cusseta, Mrs. Emma Moore, Columbus, Mrs. Verna Thompson, and Mrs. Betty Welch
of Buena Vista; three grandchildren, Sharon Sue Corbett, Walter Wayne Corbett,

Mrs. Girlene Reliford, 91, passed away Wednesday morning
around 3:30 a.m. on August 23, 1989 at her home. Funeral services were held
Sunday, August 27 at New Hope Baptist Church with interment at Popular Springs
Cemetery in Webster.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mariah Copeland
of Parrott, where she received her education. She was born June 10, 1898.
She joined the New Hope Baptist Church shortly after
marriage and was a faithful member until her death. she served as a ward
leader, the deaconess board, the missionary society and Sunday School member.
She also was a faithful member of the Order of Eastern Stars and the Independent
Fraternal Union where she served as president and secretary.
Survivors include one daughter, Mattie Wyler, Detroit,
Michigan; three sons, Clifford Reliford, Detroit, Gerue Reliford, Preston,
and James Reliford, Americus; four daughters-in-law, Frances reliford, Americus,
Nellie Reliford, Columbus, Dennis Reliford, Detroit, and Betty Reliford,
Preston; one son-in-law, Charlie Wyley, Detroit; three sisters, Thelma Billings,
Dawson, Adel Ball, Trenton, N.J., and Alice Venerable, New Mexico; three
brothers, James Copeland, Parrott, Eulice Copeland, Cannonsburg, Pa., and
Eldridge (Buddy) Copeland, Los Angeles, California; one brother-in-law, Jerry
Roberts, Albany; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren,

Roulf Vernon Stephens died about 1:30 a.m. Monday in
the Stewart-Webster Hospital after becoming ill at his home earlier in the
evening.
Graveside funeral rites were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday
in Harmony Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Rev. J. Glen Spivey conducted the service.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha Neil Wells Stephens,
and one daughter, Mrs. Maryneil Castleberry, and one son, Roulf V. Stephens,
all of Richland; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also a
large number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. stephens was a retired grocery man, and was one of
the community's most prominent and esteemed citizens. He had been in declining
health for a year or more, but his passing was sudden and unexpected, and
sad news for his many friends.

Bama Akin McGlaun, 90, of Route One, Cusseta, died early
Friday at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 at
Liberty Hill Cemetery with Rev. Rob McDaniel officiating.
Mrs. Mcglaun was born Jan. 29, 1899 in Gilmer Co., the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Akin. She had lived in Cusseta all of her
life and was a member of Liberty Hill Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, James McGlaun of Cusseta;
four daughters, Kathryn M. Kelly of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Barbara
M. Boone, Woodland Hills, California, Frances M. Caldwell of Edgewood, Kentucky,
and Martha M. Vardeman, Waverly Hall; two sisters, Vera Harper and Bonita
Chadwick, both of Elijay; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brown was born March 16, 1939, son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Herman Brown, Sr. He confessed his faith in Christ at an early age
and joined the Mill Bethel Baptist Church. He was united in holy matrimony
to Mrs. Annie Lois Williams Brown. Survivors include five children, Mr. Gregory
Brown, Ms. Gwendolyn Brown, Ms. Priscilla Brown and Mr. Roland Brown, of
Buffalo, N.Y., and Ms. Shirley Brown of Lumpkin; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel

Mr. Chapman was born Nov. 8, 1933, in Cruger, Miss.,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Malcolm Chapman. He was supervisor of shipping
an receiving of small arms at Fort Benning.

Vol. 116 Issue 37, page 3 - Roulf V. Stephens
Roulf Vernon Stephens, 83, prominent retired businessman
of Richland, and highly esteemed citizen, died around 1:00 a.m. Monday, September
4, in the Stewart-Webster Hospital which he entered earlier in the evening
after becoming desperately ill at his home. He had been in declining health
for a year or more and under treatment of specialists, but his sudden passing
came as a shock to people of the community.
Born July 21, 1906 in Carroll County, he was the son
of the late William Woodroe Stephens and Sarah Brown Stephens who moved to
Webster County in the 1920's. He was first engaged in farming, but later
entered the grocery business, retiring only in recent years. He married Martha
Neal Wells, school teacher for many years, December 29, 1929 and the couple
made their home in Richland.
Mr. Stephens was a devout member of the Richland First
Baptist Church and regular attendant. Since his retirement, he has busied
himself in gardening on a large scale. He was quietly disposed, but always
kind and cordial, greeting his friends with a cheerful smile. He was good-humored
in the home, in the store and on the street and a fine neighbor and friend.
His illness and death was heart-aching news to all who knew him, and he will
long be missed from his accustomed places.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Neal of Richland;
one daughter, Mrs. Don (Maryneil) Castleberry, and one son, Roulf V. Stephens,
Jr., both of Richland; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also
a large number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September
5 at the graveside in Harmony Cemetery, with the Reverend J. Glenn Spivey
of Enterprise, Alabama, formerly of Preston, conducting the rites. Pallbearers
were grandsons and great-grandsons.

Mr. Jones was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Stewart County,
son of Reverend and Mrs. Willie M. Jones. He was a member of Good Hope CME
Church in Cusseta, where he served on the usher board and was a class leader.
He served in the U. S. Marine Corps and retired in March 1988 from civil
service at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Albany.
Survivors include his wife, Nora; two sons, Ronald Jones
and Willie George Jones, both of Richland; two sisters, Mary L. Jones of
Columbus and Rose L. Bennett of Detroit; two brothers, Willie J. Reed of

moving to Macon County 20 years ago, was a homemaker and the widow of Kay
W. Highnote.

Mr. Foster passed away Sunday, September 17, 1989 in
Boynton, Fla. He was born March 19, 1940, son of Mrs. Sarah Lewis. He confessed

He was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Minnie Jenkins,
and to this union five children were born.

two brothers, Glynn Cooper and Drane Cooper, both of Cusseta; a brother Leonard

Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmie Hobbs and Rev. Don Wilson officiating.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Sanders was born August 8, 1921, in Marion County,
the daughter of John Thomas and Iva Louvania Wall Welch. She had lived in
Marion County for most of her life before moving to Plains six years ago.
She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and was the widow of Grover
Sanders.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Marlene Dozier,
Plains; two brothers, Thomas Welch and Arthur Welch, Buena Vista; three sisters,
Mrs. Mattie Willie Covington, Buena Vista, Mrs. Maude McElmurray, Tazewell,
Mrs. Marjorie Bruce, Richland; and two grandchildren, Marvin Dozier and Darlene
Dozier of Plains.

Virginia Brazier Halliday, 72, of Lumpkin, died Friday
at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus.
The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 7, at
Lumpkin First Baptist Church. Officiating ministers were Rev. Jack Ray of
Lumpkin, and Rev. Melvin Smith of Cuthbert. Mrs. Vicky Geeslin was the organist.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Brazier, Sammy Brazier, Raymond Gonzalez, Chuck Geeslin,
Bob Geeslin, and Rusty Bradshaw. Interment was in Eastside Cemetery in
Lumpkin.
Mrs. Halliday was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Stewart County,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Brazier. She worked at Halliday Cars
of Lumpkin and was a member of Lumpkin First Baptist Church. She was an
industrious and sweet lady who friends and family are going to sorely miss.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon; daughter, Barbara
H. Cullefer of Lumpkin; a brother, John Brazier of Richland; a sister, Mary
Alice Gonzalez of Columbus; two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, nieces
and nephews.

Mrs. Avis Patricia O'Connor McGlaun, 56, of Richland
died about 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 6, in the Stewart-Webster Hospital in
Richland after an illness of several months. She underwent brain surgery
earlier in the year.
Born August 3, 1933 in Fulton County, she was one of
three daughters of Mrs. Mae Hardage O'Connor and the late William Herbert
O'Connor.
She attended Auburn University and graduated from Georgia
Southwestern College in Americus. she later taught school at Britt David
School and Eastway School, both in Columbus, for ten years. She married Larry
McGlaun Dec. 21, 1954, and the couple resided in Richland.
Mrs. McGlaun was a member of the American Quarter Horse
Association, and of the Talomino Horse Association. She was a member of the
Assembly of God Church in Richland, and was a devout Christian woman. Her
love for her Master was evidenced in her everyday life, and her face beamed
with joy as she spoke of the grace of God. Her illness and passing has saddened
many people who will long remember her Christian influence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the graveside
in Harmony Cemetery where interment was made. The Rev. Tim Hanson, pastor
of the Richland Assembly of God Church, and the Rev. Randy Ray of LUmpkin,
conducted the last rites. Survivors, besides her husband, are two daughters,
Mrs. Sally Baldwin of Lumpkin, and Mrs. Patricia Allison Bigale of Marianna,
Florida; her mother, Mrs. O'Connor of the Americus Nursing Home; two sisters,
Mrs. Beverly Fitzpatrick of Tarversville and Mrs. Jane Lunsford of Richland
and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Morton Fort, Rossie Ross, Billy Croxton,
Gerald McGlaun, Bill Mayo, Millard Gunnels, Rhodell Dunn and Walter Stout.

Interment services for Mrs. Jewel Bell Godfrey of Columbus
were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 15 in Harmony Cemetery in Richland. She
died Friday in the Medical Center, where she was admitted after suffering
from a head injury in a fall at her home at 2933 Peabody Avenue. She was
81.
Mrs. Godfrey was the former Jewell Randall who lived
in Richland for many years and was married to Jasper Troy Godfrey of Richland.
He died a year or more ago.
Born in Randolph County, February 19, 1908, she was the
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William E. Randall. Her father was affiliated
with the Seaboard Railroad Company.
The Godfreys moved from Richland to Columbus and from
there to Tyler, Texas. The later returned to Columbus following the death
of their married son and only child.
Mrs. Godfrey was a member and deaconess of the United
Congregational Christian Church in Columbus, and was dedicated worker in
the church. She was a devout Christian whose life was filled with love and
caring for others, and sharing her God-given spiritual knowledge. Her sudden
passing was a grievous shock to many friends.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Earline Guyton of Atlanta;
four grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Virginia Brazier Halliday, 72, beloved citizen of
Lumpkin, died Friday, October 6, in St. Francis Hospital in Columbus after
and extended illness.
Born November 25, 1916, in Stewart County, she was the
daughter of the late John Wesley Brazier and Woody Shirling Brazier of Lumpkin.
She spent most of her life in Lumpkin and was prominently associated with
community activities. She worked in P.T.A. and Garden club with genuine
enthusiasm and was a part of other activities sponsored by city clubs. Mrs.
Halliday was industrious and held responsible positions during her younger
days, and operated her own store at one time. Her most recent occupation
was with Halliday Cars of Lumpkin. She was a member of the Lumpkin First
Baptist and was active in its organizations. Before ill health intervened,
she was full of energy and dependability. She was employed in several positions
at one time.
She was endeared to a host of friends who mourn her untimely
illness and passing.
She married Vernon Halliday of Lumpkin November 28, 1936,
who survives her. Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Cullefer
of Lumpkin, and one brother, John Wesley Brazier, Jr., of Richland; one sister,
Mrs. Mary Alice Gonzalez of Columbus and two grandchildren, Robin Bradshaw
of Lumpkin, and Scott Fant of Marietta. Also one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October
7, at the Lumpkin First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Ray, pastor, and
the Rev. Melvin Smith, of Cuthbert, officiating. Mrs. Vickie Geeslin was
organist.
Interment was in Eastside Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral
Home of Richland in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Byrma Chambless Armour, 86, one of Richland's most
prominent and esteemed business women, died Wednesday night, October 18,
1989, in St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, after an illness of only a few
days. She entered the hospital on the previous Saturday.
Born May 15, 1903, in Stewart County, she was a daughter
of the late George M. Chambless and Cornelia Bond Chambless. She grew up
in Stewart County and married ElNathan Pearson Armour in the 1920's. He died
of a heart attack on Oct. 9, 1955, during the final construction of their
lovely home in Richland. She owned and operated a grocery store for many
years and was well known by all the people. She was quiet and gentle, never
outgoing, but her low-keyed soft voice reached the hearts of her countless
friends who mourn her passing. She was a lovely person with a stainless character
and was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the Richland Primitive
Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, E. P. Armour, Jr. of Richland,
and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Williams, of the Los Angeles area in California;
two grandchildren, Mrs. Teresa Spencer of Angora, California and Scott Armour
of Manassas, Va.; two great granddaughters, Vanessa Spencer and Celeste Spencer,
both of Angora; also a son-in-law, Wiley Carlton Williams, and a daughter-in-law,
Mary Hobbs Armour.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. saturday at the
First Baptist Church in Richland with the Rev. Jerry Lee Rea, pastor of Bethlehem
Baptist Church of Dothan, Ala., former Richland pastor, conducting the rites.
Mrs. B. W. Mayo was organist.
Interment was in Harmony Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.

Weyman E. Cannington, Sr., 75, of Donalsonville, passed
away October 16, 1989, at his residence.
He was born in Stewart Co. on October 8, 1914. His parents
were the late Larkin Leonza Cannington and Katie Goree Cannington.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Barber Cannington of
Donalsonville; one son, Weyman E. Cannington, Jr. of Lumpkin; one daughter,
Beth C. Corley of Jacksonville, FL.; two brothers, Marlin Cannington of Iron
City and Heyward Cannington of Waycross; two sisters, Grace Schiffgens of
Atlanta and Billie Zorn of Bainbridge; and four grandchildren, Weyman E.
Cannington, III and Jill C. Bennett, both of Lumpkin, Caylon C. West of Slocumb,
Ala. and Chad Corley of Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Cannington retired as an agent of Gulf Life Insurance
after 27 years with the company. He and Mrs. Cannington were managers of
the Seminole County Group Home. He was a member of the Donalsonville First
Baptist Church.
Mr. Cannington was very active in First Baptist Churches
in Bainbridge and Donalsonville where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday
School classes for many years, was a former Sunday School Superintendent,
active in Bainbridge and Donalsonville Lions Clubs, member of Life Underwriters
Assoc., trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, Member of Orion Lodge
No. 8 F&AM, Charter member of the Hasan Shrine Temple; and member of
Gideon's International.
Services were held at 2:00 Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1989 at
the Donalsonville First Baptist Church with interment at Friendship Cemetery
in Donalsonville with Rev. Luther Hastey, Rev. Tommy Dobbins, Dr. L. Don
Duvall, Rev. Frank Short and Rev. Robert Anderson officiating.
Active pallbearers were his nephews. Honorary pallbearers

25, 1989, from St. James CME Church for Mrs. Rosie Banks, 76, of Columbus,

Mrs. Banks was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Stewart County,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Augusta Pearson. She was a homemaker, and was a
member, clerk and Missionary Board member of Good Hope CME Church. She was
a member of the Cordele District Ministers' Wives Union and was the widow
of the Rev. M. C. Banks.
Survivors include two brothers, Willie B. Pearson and
Lester Pearson, both of Kissimmee, Fla.; a sister, Ozie Thompson of

Stonewall Jackson (Jack) Patterson III, of Cusseta and
Atlanta, died in Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta on Friday, October 20,
1989, after a short illness.
Born April 20, 1931, in Columbus, he was the son of the
late Stonewall Jackson (Stonie) Patterson, Jr., and the late Martha King
Patterson. After his father's death in 1987, he had lived with his sister
and brother-in-law, Dallas and Dave Jankowski in Atlanta. He visited often
with his Patterson kin people in the Renfroe community near Cusseta.
Jack was well known and had many friends throughout
Chattahoochee and Stewart Counties who were saddened at his sudden passing.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law with
whom he resided, and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Patterson,
of Renfroe; one niece, Kelli Patterson, and two nephews, David and Danny
Patterson, of Renfroe.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the
Cusseta Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rob McDaniel officiating. Mrs. Jackie
Coleman was organist, and Z. C. Clay was soloist.

Mr. Nelson was born Dec. 5, 1952, in Cusseta, son of
Charlie and Odessa Taylor Nelson. He was a steelworker and a member of Red
Hill Christian Church.
Survivors, other than his mother, include three sisters,
Joann Horne and Margie Miller, both of Richland, and Sandy George of West
Germany; two brothers, Benny Nelson of Tampa, Florida, and Jimmy Nelson of

Mrs. Fannie Mitchell, 68, of Columbus, passed away Monday,
October 30 at her home.
Mrs. Mitchell was born December 22, 1920 in Omaha, a
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Stafford. She was retired from the Fort
Benning food service and was a member of New Bethel AME Church, its usher
board, vocal choir and stewardess board. She was secretary to International
Benevolent Society, Lodge No. 613.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie Brown of Columbus;
four brothers, Charlie Richardson of Columbus, and Eugene Stafford, Earnest
Stafford and Felix Stafford, all of Detroit; two sisters, Sarah Stafford
of Detroit and Pearlie Mae Pugh of Columbus; 13 grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.

Vol. 116 Issue 44, page 2 - Dr. Hawey Wells
Dr. Hawey Adolphus Wells of Athens, West Virginia, retired
educator, and one time resident of Richland, died in his sleep Friday night,
Oct. 27, after one or more years of declining health. He was 90 years of
age.
Born in Alpharetta, he was the son of the late Thomas
Durward Wells and Ola Trammell Wells. He finished high school at Berry College
at Mt. Berry and was graduated from Mercer University in Macon. At Mercer
he was a member of the Glee Club. Before entering Mercer, he taught at Berry
for a while.
He later met and married Miss Dorothy Morton, a Shorter
graduate and school teacher.
The couple moved some years later to Athens, West Virginia
and both taught at Concord College Wells taught Science and Biology at Concord
until his retirement several years ago. On the occasion of his retirement
he was honored at a social meeting, and was the recipient of an honorary
Doctors Degree.
Dr. Wells purchased a winter home at Safety Harbor, Florida
where he and his wife spent their winter months, returning to Athens, West
Virginia in the spring.
The Wells family moved from Alpharetta to Richland in
1920 and were residents here for several years. Dr. Wells was in and out
of Richland from year to year, visiting his sister and family who lived here,
and he never forgot his ties with old friends. He was a talented vocalist
and played musical instruments. He was quiet and unassuming with pleasing
mannerism. He was endowed with fine traits and had countless friends who
were deeply saddened at his sudden passing.
Survivors include his wife of Athens, West Virginia;
three daughters, Mrs. Annola Lancaster of Spring, Texas, Mrs. Dottie Skinner
of Safety Harbor, Florida, and Mrs. Peggy Eagar of Cleveland, Ohio; and one
son, Dr. Hawey A. Wells of Charleston, S. C.; one sister, Mrs. Martha Neal
Stephens of Richland; and one brother, Tom D. Wells, Jr. of Brevard, S. C.
Also a number of nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Don Castleberry and Roulf
V. Stephens, Jr., both of Richland. Also several grandchildren.
Funeral and burial was in Athens, West Virginia on Monday,
Oct. 30.

Mrs. Lois Mitchell Hobbs, 74, of Richland, died at 4
a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, in St. Francis Hospital in Columbus after an illness
of several weeks. She entered the hospital about a week earlier.
Mrs. Hobbs was a native of Quitman County. She was born
Dec. 10, 1914, daughter of the late James Frank Mitchell and Fannie Strickland
Mitchell. She married Frank Hobbs July 20, 1930, at a youthful age and the
couple lived in Columbus before Mr. Hobbs death on Feb. 19, 1963.
Following her husband's death, Mrs. Hobbs moved to Richland
where she had called home for 26 years.
She was a member of the Richland Assembly of God Church
and a homemaker. She never joined any organization. She was a good neighbor
and friend and a good wife and mother. She served her family, whatever their
needs were, and was non-complaining always. She was kind and friendly every
step of the way and was brave and big-hearted and kept on "smiling through"
when faced with adversities. Her passing was a sad shock to many friends.
Survivors include five daughters and four sons; they
are Mrs. Inez Cochran of Salt Springs, Fla., Marcus Hobbs and Marty Hobbs,
both of Dublin, Mrs. Essie Lofton of Preston, Mrs. Lucille Chancellor of
Weston, Mrs. Jane Smith of Perry, David Hobbs of Terre Haute, Indiana, Johnny
Hobbs of Luthersville, and Mrs. Mary Armour of Richland; one sister, Mrs.
Vera Daniel of Richland Nursing Home; 32 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild. Three deceased children are Mrs. Ann Wilder
Nutt, Jerry Hobbs and Mrs. Frankie Gay.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Richland
Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Tim Hanson, pastor, conducting the rites.

Johnny Lee Nelson, 36, promising young citizen of Richland
and Waverly Hall, died almost instantly Monday, Oct. 30, while on the job
as a steel worker with CCSI in Atlanta. He was pronounced dead at South Fulton
Hospital in East Point.
Born 5, 1952, in Cusseta, he was the son of Mrs. Odessa
Taylor Nelson and the late Charlie Lee Nelson.
Johnny was a student of Richland High School and attended
the Red Hill Christian Church. He had lived in Waverly Hall for three and
a half years.
Johnny was well known in this section and surrounding
areas and had many friends who were shocked and grieved to learn of his sudden
passing.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Odessa Nelson of Richland;
three sisters, Mrs. Joanne Horne and Mrs. Marjorie Miller, both of Richland,
and Mrs. Sandy George of West Germany; two brothers, Benny Nelson of Tampa,
Fla., and Jimmy Nelson of Richland; four nieces and two nephews. They are
Traci Horne and Chuck Miller, both of Richland; Christie and Lindsey Nelson
of Tampa, Fla.; and Memery Walker and Ryan George, of West Germany.

2 at the Red Hill Christian Church with Rev. Connie Mack Goare conducting
the rites. Mrs. Martha Jordan played and sang "One Day At A Time," and "I'll
Meet You In The Morning."

Dovie Mae Harbuck Evans of Pompano Beach, Florida died
at her home on October 21, after an illness of several weeks.
She was the wife of Charles E. Evans who died in 1988.
Born Nov. 20, 1910 in Stewart County, she ws the daughter
of the late Henry Judson Harbuck, and Ada Foster Harbuck. She grew up in
the Red Hill Community and attended school in Richland. She had lived in
Florida since or before her marriage to Mr. Evans. They had no children.
Mrs. Mavis Hill of Leesburg, spent the past three or
four weeks with her sister and was with her when she passed away.
Funeral and burial was at Pompano Beach.
Survivors include one brother, H. J. Harbuck of Richland;
one sister, Mrs. Mavis Hill of Leesburg, and several nieces and nephews,
including Don and Jimmy Hill of Leesburg, Mrs. Martha Woody of Richland,
Mrs. Valerie Blanton of Albany, Mack Harbuck, Jr. of Macon, and Mrs. Betty
Parsons of Memphis, Tenn.

George Arch Perry, 80, of Route One, Parrott, died on
Wednesday, November 1st, at Palmyra Park Hospital in Albany. Graveside services
were held on Friday, November 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at Foreman Cemetery in Webster
County. Rev. Leighton Norris and Rev. James Eldridge officiated at the
service.
Active pallbearers were Millard Gunnels, Keith McRee,
Bobby Perry, Johnny Heath, Hubert Moseley, Jr. and Edward Goodwin. Honorary
pallbearers were L. L. Spence, Cecil Reese, Claude Fletcher, Joe Lunsford,
J. B. Grimsley, Sr., and Julian Lay.
Mr. Perry was born in Randolph County on March 5, 1909.
His parents were the late John A. Perry and the late Lula Bolton Perry. He
was a lifetime resident of the Parrott Community, a member of the Weston
Baptist Church, and was the retired owner of Perry Feed & Seed Co. of
Dawson. He was also a member of the National Rifleman's Association.
Mr. Perry was well known over a wide area, and had many
friends who were deeply saddened at his passing.
Mr. Perry is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Cooper Perry;
one daughter, Mrs. Mary P. Grimsley of Parrott; one sister, Miss Florence
Perry of Vidalia; two grandchildren, Stephen Grimsley of Auburn, Ala., and
Merydith Grimsley of Parrott.

Baxley Taylor, 60, of Seale, Alabama, who passed away Saturday, November
4 in Stewart County. Striffler-Hamby Mortuary of Columbus was in charge of
the arrangements.
Mrs. Taylor was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Barbour County,
daughter of J. C. and Annie Bell Baxley. She was a contract hauler for the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer for the last nine years.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Paul Taylor, Sr.;
two sons, Frank Paul Taylor, Jr. of Columbus and Robert Wayne Taylor of Lakeland,
Florida; three brothers, Dewey Baxley of Seale, Mitchell Baxley of Rock Hill,
S.C., and Franklin Baxley of Gracewood; four sisters, Elizabeth Turner of

Walter Ray Chalkley, 61, of LaGrange, formerly of Richland,
died Sunday at Florence Hand Retirement Center after a long period of declining
health. Born July 9, 1928, in Americus, he was one of ten children of the
late Johnnie W. Chalkley and Mae Ola Dorman Chalkley. He moved with the family
to Richland when he was a young boy and went to school in the elementary
grades. After a few years, the family returned to Americus and Ray finished
high school in Americus.
He joined the United States Navy and served one or more
terms, and later became manager of Hanover Shoe Company. He retired because
of ill health, and had been a resident of the LaGrange Retirement Home for
several years.
Ray is remembered as a good person with sterling character
and was always missed among family gatherings whenever he was unable to attend.
His passing saddened many friends and loved ones.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Cowart
of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Shirley Alston of Coco, Fla., and Mrs. Sandra
Youngblood of Palatka; three brothers, Johnnie W. Chalkley, Jr., of Jacksonville,
Fla., James Chalkley of LaGrange, and Larry J. Chalkley of Stone Mountain,
and a number of nieces and nephews. Three sisters preceded him to the
grave.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6,
at the graveside in Harmony Cemetery in Richland where interment was made.
The Rev. Jerry Lee Rea pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama,
former Richland pastor, conducted the rites.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday,
November 16 from Fourth Street Baptist Church for William J. Toney, 77, of
Columbus, who passed away Monday, November 13 at St. Francis Hospital. Burial
was in Green Acres Cemetery with Progressive Funeral Home in charge of the
arrangements.
Mr. Toney was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Omaha, son of the
Rev. and Mrs. Eugene Toney. He had lived in Columbus most of his life, and
was retired from Sunshine Bakery Co., after 17 years of service. He was a
member of Modernistic Civil and Social club, and Fourth Street Baptist Church,
where he served on its East Carver Heights Mission and was a former Ward
Leader.
Survivors include his wife, Saddie Pearl; a son, William
A. Toney of Atlanta; a brother, Eugene Toney of Albany, N.Y.; two sisters,
Mae Eva Flowers of Omaha, and Clara Harris of Albany, N.Y.; three grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Grace Lanelle Perry Brown, 69, of Panama City, Florida,
died around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, November 9, in Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama
City after a long illness. She was the sister of Mrs. Joe (Betty) Peek of
Louvale, and the niece of Mrs. Mae Drew Lee of Richland.
Born in Richland March 8, 1920, she ws the daughter of
the late Lievela Drew Perry and P. V. Perry. She spent her growing up days
in Richland and attended the Richland schools. She moved to Florida in later
years and married James L. Brown.
She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. She is
remembered in her former hometown as a lovely person and was endeared to
many friends. Although ill health had kept her apart from this locality where
she was born and raised, her passing saddened the hearts of all who knew
her.
Survivors include her husband and one daughter, Mrs.
Jimmie Loraine Alexander, both of Panama City; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Peek
of Louvale, and Mrs. Frances Brooks of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers,
Billy Perry of Panama City and Robert Perry of Sacramento. California; eight
grandchildren and one aunt, Mrs. Lee of Richland, and a number of cousins,
including Mrs. Carolyn Anglin of Richland.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November
11 at the graveside in Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Wiley D.
Davis officiating.
Entombment followed with Kent Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peek of Louvale attended the funeral
in Panama City.

Mr. Price was born June 26, 1916, in Webster County,
son of William Elonzo and Myra Johnson Price. He was a retired self-employed

75, of Shellman, who passed away Tuesday, November 14 at Patterson Hospital

Mr. Williams was born Dec. 2, 1913, in Stewart County,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest R. Williams. He had lived in Shellman most of
his life and was retired from the Sunnyside store as a clerk.

Earl William Robinson, 81, retired businessman of Columbus,
died in the Medical Center in Columbus Wednesday, November 15. He was a native
of Genesee County, Michigan.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 Saturday at the graveside
in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Stewart County. The Rev. Mark Baker of Columbus
was the officiating minister.
Born April 13, 1908 in Genesee County, Michigan, he was
the son of the late John Robinson and Elizabeth Scharfee Robinson. He was
a retired welder and was a longtime employee of Chrysler Corporation in Michigan.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers.
Survivors include his wife, the former Louise Chesser;
one son, Earl William robinson, Jr. of Columbus; one step-son, Arthur Godson
of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Myrtice Diamond of Detroit; a brother, Paul Robinson
of Cleveland, Ohio.
Vol. 116 Issue 46, page 2 - Cecil R. Ivey
Cecil Robert Ivey, 76, retired grocery man of Richland,
and highly esteemed citizen, died suddenly during the early afternoon Thursday,
November 16, only minutes after he had a neighborly conversation with a next
door friend. He had long had health problems and was hospitalized a short
while ago.
Born July 17, 1911 in Webster County at the homeplace
known as Ivey's Mill, he was the son of the late Robert Ellis Ivey and Ethel
Hollomon Ivey The family later moved to the Red Hill Community, near Richland,
where Cecil attended school. He started out as a very young man to having
a business of his own and worked diligently until his retirement ten years
ago. He owned and operated Ivey's Grocery for fifty years.
Cecil was regarded as a person who went about with a
will of his own. He was endowed with a determined way of life, with faith
and confidence in his knowledge and beliefs. He was honest and true to his
fellowman, never wavering in his business dealings. He was possessed of a
clean character and a jovial disposition which won for him many friendships
who were deeply saddened at his sudden passing. There was never but one Cecil
Ivey, and he was loved and admired by many people. A businessman never to
be forgotten.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Richland; three
sons, Jack Ivey of Manchester, C. R. (Bobby) Ivey, Jr., of Richland, and
Joe Ivey of Meridian, Mississippi; one daughter, Mrs. Ann Sterling of Birmingham,
Alabama; three brothers, Walter Ivey of Richland, Oliver Ivey of Summerville,
S.C., and Ellis Ivey of Woodruff, S. C.; three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Leidy
of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Jewell Sutton of Tifton, and Mrs. Mary Leak of Buford;
thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Myrne
Ivey Mathis, died in 1988.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, at
the Richland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Brinson of Brunswick,
Rev. Warren Williams of Macon, former pastors of the church, and the Rev.
Tim Hanson, pastor of the Richland Assembly of God Church, conducting the
rites. Mrs. Ruby Turner was organist.
Interment was in Harmony Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Earl Smith, Willie McKenney, Chris Dudley,

Mrs. Annie Bullock Dekle of Magnolia Manor Nursing Home
in Americus, died Monday, November 27 at the age of 89. She was a former
resident of Preston, and the mother of James Dekle.
Born August 31, 1900 in Thomas County, she was the daughter
of the late William B. Bullock and Sara Whitfield Bullock. She married James
R. Dekle, Sr., and the couple spent much of their married life in Ochlocknee,
where Mrs. Dekle was a member of the Ochlocknee Methodist Church. She was
well known in Preston and had many friends to whom she was endeared.
Mr. Dekle died in 1988. Survivors include one son, James
R. Dekle, Jr. of Preston; and one sister, Mrs. Clarice Colombo of Jefferson;
two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 28 at 3
p.m. at the graveside of Ochlocknee Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral Home
in charge of arrangements. The Reverend Mary Jane Wilson conducted the last
rites.
The family suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations
be made to the Preston Methodist Church.

Mrs. Leah Dunaway, 83, died Thursday, November 23 at
the Stewart-Webster Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born September 29, 1906, she was the daughter of the
late George Trammell and Ella Cannington Trammell. She was the widow of Walter
Obe Dunaway who died February 18, 1989.
She was a member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. Mrs.
Dunaway had been active in church work, but her health problems slowed her
from many activities. She was one of Lumpkin's beloved ladies and had many
friends who sadly regret her illness and death.
Survivors include one son, Raymond Dunaway of Williston,
S. C.; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Hazel Timms and Mrs. Millie Riles, both of
Lumpkin; one half-brother, Phillips House of Williston; ten grandchildren,
and sixteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, November
24 at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Randall Ray, pastor, and the Rev. Ed Holloway, were the officiating
ministers, Mrs. Billy Green was pianist.

Mrs. Annie Melton Sauls, 72, of Route One, Shellman,
died Tuesday, November 28th at Patterson Hospital in Cuthbert after a short

Mrs. Melton was born Oct. 9, 1917 in Randolph County,
daughter of John Melton and Claudie Brown Melton. She was married to the
late Dupont Sauls, was a member of Bethlehem Free Will Baptist Church, and
was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Billy Sauls, Shellman; a
step-daughter, Mrs. Maxine Beard, Shellman; two brothers, Jack Melton and
Ross Melton, both of Shellman; three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Whatley, Americus,
Mrs. Ida Johnson, Lumpkin, and Mrs. Bertha Hayes of Savannah; and several
grandchildren.

of fire on front page
Thomas Perrymond, 79, perished in his mobile home on
Stevens Street, Lumpkin, when it was totally destroyed in a fire at approximately
10:30 p.m. Saturday night, December 2. The State Fire Marshall, G.B.I., and
Lumpkin Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire, but it
is thought to have been caused by a possible faulty heater. The Lumpkin Volunteer
Fire Department remained at the scene until about 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
A friend of Mr. Thomas, Ida Mae Clark, 73, tried to awaken him when she saw
smoke in the trailer, but was unable to wake him. Mr. Thomas was pronounced
dead by Stewart County Coroner Jimmy Wilder around midnight.

Mrs. Jessie Mae Sapp Reeves, 86, of Lumpkin, died Sunday,
December 10 at Peachtree Nursing Home in Warner Robins after a long decline
in health.
Born December 5, 1903, in Webster County, she was the
daughter of the late George A. Sapp and Lula Carrie Ball Sapp. She was reared
in the Center Point Community and married Eugene Emory Reeves, who died in
March of 1986.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Lumpkin First
Baptist Church. Mrs. Reeves had long been a resident of Lumpkin and had many
friends there and throughout Webster County who knew and loved her, and were
saddened at her passing.
Survivors included two cousins, Mrs. Alice Jones of Preston
and Mrs. Florence Minick of Warner Robins.
Graveside funeral rites were held at 3 p.m. Monday, December
11, in Macedonia Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements. Connie Mack Goare conducted the service.

Walter Clinton Broach, 70, of Lawrenceville, died Sunday
in DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur, following a weeks illness. He suffered
a paralytic stroke as cause of his illness.
Born in Orangeburg, S. C. June 5, 1919, he was reared
in Richland. His parents were Wilkerson Ward Broach and Lois Peek Broach,
prominent citizens of Richland. He was a graduate of Richland High School
and served in the United States Army. He retired with the Intelligence Division,
as a veteran of World War II.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, December 13, at
Wages & Sons Funeral HOme in Stone Mountain with private entombment in
Floral Hills Memory Gardens at Tucker.
Walter Clinton was a popular young man as he grew up
in Richland, and had many friends who were shocked and saddened at his
passing.
Survivors included his wife, Marie; two sons, Hurdis
Broach of Lawrenceville, and Jerry Sanders of Stone Mountain; a daughter,
Nancy Hurd of Stone Mountain; one brother, Wilkes Broach; a sister, Mrs.
Robert (Ruth Ann) McDonnell, both of Columbus; four grandchildren; and a

Jim J. Blackmon, 74, of Columbus passed away Saturday,
December 16 at The Medical Center.
Mr. Blackmon was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Richland, son
of Morgan and Mollie Lewis Blackmon. He worked in Sunbeam Heating Co.'s general
maintenance department, and was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church.

Hattie Adams Pantone, 85, prominent and esteemed citizen
of Americus, and formerly of Preston, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, in Magnolia
Nursing Home in Americus after an extended illness.
Born in Webster County, Mrs. Pantone was the daughter
of the late Salina Abagail Felts Adams and Charles A. Adams. She was a member
of a large family with all deceased but one sister, Mrs. Thelma Russey of
Americus.
Mrs. Pantone worked for a number of years as head bookkeeper
of the Bank of Commerce in Americus, retiring in 1965. She was industrious
and energetic throughout the years, and had scores of friends everywhere.
Her long illness and passing saddened the hearts of all who knew her.
She was a member of the Americus First Baptist Church,
a Sunday School teacher and a leader in the Missionary Society.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Russey and a large

Adams Joines, and Mrs. Samps (Bessie) Gunnels, both of Preston. Also Mrs.
Eva Tyler.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel
of the Hancock Funeral Home and burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Vol. 116 Issue 51, page 2 - Mrs. Frances Merritt
Mrs. Frances Elizabeth Smith Merritt, 82, of Richland,
died Thursday, Dec. 14 in Doctors Hospital in Columbus after an illness of
about a year.
Born Nov. 4, 1907 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, her
parents were Eugene Smith and Millie Goodwin Smith.
Mrs. Merritt moved to Richland several years ago and
was a member of the Richland First Baptist Church. She was also a member
of Sims Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the White
Shriners.
Mrs. Merritt was a retired accountant for Uniroyal. After
coming to Richland to live she had made many friends who deeply regretted
her passing.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Jeanie Bell Jones
of Richland and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16,
in the chapel of L. B. Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Holloway of Lumpkin,
conducting the rites. Mrs. Pam Timms was organist.
Interment was in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with
L. B. Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Gill, Charles Lee, Grady Lee,
Billy Bearden, Todd Bearden, and Gene Allen Smith.

Annie Pearl Huddleston, 85, of Lamar, formerly of Richland,
died Monday at Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar.
A graveside funeral service was held Tuesday, December
26 at 2 p.m. at Redhill Cemetery, Stewart County, according to L. B. Smith
Funeral Home, Richland.
Mrs. Huddleston was born Sept. 26, 1904, in Columbus,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Broughton. She was a homemaker and a member
of Forest Grove Baptist Church in Lamar.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Johnson of Lamar;
a son, John B. Huddleston of Daytona, Florida; eight grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December
26 from Preston United Methodist Church for Mrs. Gussie Blanche West Wills,
87, of Preston, who passed away Monday, December 25 at Magnolia Manor Nursing
Center in Americus. Burial was in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Wills was born Aug. 18, 1902, in Worth County, daughter
of Benjamin and Lula McGill West. She was a member of Preston United Methodist
Church and the United Methodist Women. She was the widow of O. R. Wills,
Sr.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Wills, Ray Wills,
Jr., and Dennis Wills, all of Preston; three sisters, Pauline Cato of Moultrie,
Mattie Gasner of Mount Vernon, Washington, and Nettie Fussell of Preston;
nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Hancock Funeral Home of Americus was in charge of the
arrangements.

Joel Bates (J. B.) Westbrook, 80, one of Richland's most
prominent and leading citizens, died about 5 p.m. Sunday, December 17, in
the Stewart-Webster Hospital after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 10, 1909, in Milton County, he was the son
of the late Joel Westbrook and Nannie Bates Westbrook. The couple moved to
Stewart County when their family was young and J. B. graduated from Lumpkin
High School.
He was engaged in farming and later as a rural letter
carrier. He was later a car salesman, and also a Woodmen of the World insurance
representative.
He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, Richland
Camp, and a member of the Richland First Baptist Church. He was a former
member of the church choir. He was loyal to his memberships and excelled
in his vocations. It can truly be said that he was a dependable person and
a successful businessman.
He married Mary Prothro Hamilton in 1943. She died years
ago. Mr. Westbrook was a devoted husband and father and was everybody's friend.
His interest in current events and his good sense of humor drew him to others,
and he was admired and appreciated by all who knew him. His declining health
over the last few years and his passing saddened many friends who will long
cherish his memory.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jere Oglesby of
Savannah, and Mrs. Dana Smith of St. Simons; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Laura
Dudley of Richland; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Turner of Richland, and Mrs. Eva
Mosteller of Roswell; two brothers, Thomas Westbrook and Harold Westbrook,
both of Lumpkin; one grandson, and three step-grandchildren. Also a number
of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19,
at the Richland First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Lee Rea of Alabama,
former Richland pastor, conducting the rites. Mrs. B. W. Mayor was
organist.
Interment was in Harmony Cemetery with L. B. Smith Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Chris Dudley IV, Tom Mayo, Todd Westbrook,
Sr., David Barrett, Alex Lunsford, and Grier Holloway.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (today)
from County Line Baptist Church near Lumpkin for Aldine J. Long, 65, of Cuthbert,
who passed away Monday, December 25, at Patterson Hospital. Burial will be
in the church cemetery.
Mr. Long was born March 7, 1924, in Randolph County,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Bartow Long. He was retired as a service Station attendant
and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy: two daughters, Lisa
Taylor and Renee Holbrook, both of Cuthbert; a stepson, James C. Daniels
of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Agnes Ranew of Cuthbert and Peggy Geeslin
of Lumpkin; and four grandchildren.
Lunsford Funeral Home of Cuthbert was in charge of the
arrangements.
