Statham Family

Contributed by Tom Heisler and Belinda Slocumb

The earliest Stathams to the Stewart County area were Nathaniel Statham (also listed as Thomas Nathaniel), son of John Statham, and William Dabney Statham , possible son of John (but some VA records indicate John was a guardian of the "orphan" William Dabney and not his father). Nathaniel's son Thompson Nathaniel (also called "Nat" and may be listed in records as T.N.) fought in the Indian Wars in the area about 1836, and William Dabney Statham's sons Richmond and Garland also came to Stewart County and all were in the area by 1840. Thompson Nathaniel's oldest children might have been born in the Stewart County area, but it appears that all must have returned to Abbeville, Wilcox County GA where T.N. remained the rest of his life and where three of his sons enlisted during the Civil War. T.N.'s father Nathaniel was a Revolutionary soldier and is listed on the veteran's census for 1840 in Stewart County. Garland is likely the "William Statham" who appears as a slaveowner on the 1850 census of Sumter County (William Garland Statham). More documentation is needed to determine the children of both Richmond and Garland, but currently we believe the familes of both are as follows:

Richmond Statham (b. abt 1803 Houston Co. GA, d. 14 Oct 1854 Webster Co.) son of William Dabney Statham and Frances Meredith Garland, married Elizabeth Brunson (b. abt 1810 Houston Co. GA, d. 14 Feb 1853 Webster Co.) on 9 Dec 1832 in Houston Co. (Marriage Book A 1833-1852). Their children:
