$400,000 Fire, Whole Town Threatened
Hotel and Opera House among buildings burned, the flames having originated in the hotel Flames unchecked at 2’oclock this morning
Chattanooga, Tennessee, April 8. At 2am a telephone message from Dalton Ga, states that the entire town is threatened by fire which broke out at midnight in the kitchen of the Hotel Dalton.
A special train is being made up in this city to carry an engine and fighters to the assistance of the doomed city.
The loss at 2’oclock is estimated at $400,000 and there is little prospects of stopping the spread of the flames.
The Hotel Dalton, where the fire started is in ashes, along with the Dalton Opera House and many other business houses on Hamilton Avenue.
A stiff breeze is fanning the fire and the fire department is helpless to arrest the fires spread.
Aside for the request from Chattanooga for fire fighting apparatus, other towns have been appealed for help. Twelve lines of regular fire hose are now playing streams of water on the blaze, but are apparently making no impression. There is practically no hope of saving the business section of the city.
