"Cotton farmers hit Dalton like a whirlwind each fall after picking began in late August or early September.  Wagons crowded the dusty, sometimes muddy streets.  Some farmers brought their cotton to town already ginned and baled, and others utilized the two gins in town.  They fanned out across Hamilton Street, Daltons major business thoroughfare, selling their cotton and produce in exchange for foodstuffs and other necessities.  Normally their crops fetched a price below that of the store-bought goods they needed, and so the local supply merchants usually extended them credit, taking a mortgage on the farmers crops and land in return."
