Application, Sept 15, 1919:

G M Cannon, Dalton, Whitfield County, GA

Living in Georgia since 1880

Enlisted May 1861, Madisonville TN, Co E, 59th TN Infantry

Was in military up to July 4, 1863.  Siege of Vicksburg, Miss, then joined Wheelers Cavalry (Capt Clarks), Oct 1864, and Kingston GA May, 1865.

Was captured during the war at Mt Airy KY, summer of 1863, was released about 1 week later.

 

20 Sept 1919: I hereby certify that after the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi and being paroled I returned to my home in Monroe TN, suffering with diarrhea for some three months, and not being able for service with infantry any longer I enlisted with Wheelers Cavalry, Ashbys Regiment, Co G, 2nd TN, and remained with said cavalry till close of war and surrendered at Kingston GA.  I further certify that I do not know of anyone serving with me in paid cavalry that is in life at this time.  Signed G M Cannon Sr

 

5 May 1920. This application is so badly mixed up that it cannot be intelligently read and understood.  This record shows him absent without leave from November 17, 1863.  Must amend and state an honorable accounting of his self to the end of the war.  The witness submitted knows nothing of the latter's service.  Must prove all of the statements made to be true by a witness that of his own knowledge to be true.  J W Lindsey, Com of Pensions.

May 12, 1927: The application of Mrs Annie E L Cannon for a pension in her own right as the widow of G M Cannon has been approved and her name has been added to the pension roll for the payment of Second Quarter pension. ……Commissioner of Pensions.
