To Jefferson Davis; 15 Mar 1861; Recommendation to First Lieutenancy for Jesse A Glenn, signed by J A R Hanks, Edw M Galt, J A Black,  W P Chester, W H Trousell? Rome Georgia, 20 Mar 1861: The enclosed recommendation was forwarded to me at this place from Montgomery or it would have been --- presented.  The names on the list are among the most respected in the City of Dalton, the place of Mr Glenns residence.  Mr Glenn is a lawyer, 27 or 8 years old, in pretty full practice.  2 of very fair talents.  He is the brother in law of the late presiding judge of the district, Judge L W Cavok.  Mr Glenn, unfortunately, in the late election got into a personal difficulty with his Dr Maffit, over a floating (?) vote and in the encounter killed Dr Maffit.  This has been the source of much regret to him and is the cause of his drive to change his profession.  No man perhaps of better talents will be appointed to a lieutenancy in the regular army and no soldier will be found in its ranks of more undaunted ---.  My opinion is the public service would be promoted by his appointment.  With highest consideration. Augustus Meiggs?

Appointment as Col, 12 July 1862, by election; took rank 24 April, 1862; date of acceptance 18 July 1862.

Dismissed court martial, Jan 23, 1864.

May 22, 1864, Greensboro GA: Mr President;  On the 11th ---at Dalton Geo, on my return from Big Shantee, Cobb County, Geo at which place I was removing from Dalton so as to keep my family, negroes, property etc in the rear of the army.  I had succeeded in removing the greater portion of my property and returned to Dalton to ship the remainder when I was arrested (as I was informed) by order of General Johnson and the next morning sent under guard.  I demanded a hearing which was refused.  I called for a copy of the charges against me and for a copy of the order from the Secty of War or the President for my arrest.  My demands were not heard.  I was treated like a felon and sent to the place where I have remained.  Not having been notified of the accusation against me, or the order from the War Department for my arrest and not being conscious of having committed any offense, I insist that my arrest is unjust, oppressive and illegal.  I therefore appeal to you as my only means of orders for my release, and hope you will right me when I have been ----.  As obstructed I know nothing of my arrest.  I have been informed by a letter from a friend that General Johnson ordered me arrested and sent to the rear.  Having heard that I should have said that "I did not believe the nuse (news) from Virginia to be true and that I was not going to move to the rear of our Army and did fall back."  The statements imputed to me never entered my mind.  It was the act of an enemy of mine who desired to injure me and concocted that statement for that purpose.  Or the person who desired to put the statement in circulation connected my name with it for the purpose of giving the statement the wright (sic) of my name and influence with the citizens and soldiers of Upper Georgia.  I have been badly treated ---death wish upon the --- statement of my enemies, without a warrant or affidavit.  I have been arrested and imprisoned.  I appeal to you for redress.  Yours respectfully, Jesse A Glenn (formerly Col, 36th Regt)

Oct 3, 1864. Respectfully returned, there being no specific charges against Jesse A Glenn.  I direct the Provost Marshall at Greensboro GA to release him.  M H Coffer, Col and Pro Mar General.

Jesse A Glenn, of Whitfield County, he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate States as a Colonel, 36th Regt of Georgia Volunteers.  That whilst engaged in such military service, at the siege of Vicksburg in Mississippi on 18 June 1863, he was wounded in the left shoulder and arm, and that his forefinger and thumb were amputated and the left arm is of little or no use and that he has not supplied himself with an artificial limb. 8 Dec 1883.

Commissioned Officers Affidavit: J R McAfee; a commissioned surgeon in 36th Regt of Georgia Volunteers, that he knows Col J A Glenn lost a thumb and forefinger in the war.  This is to certify that about the 18th day of June 1863, Col Jesse A Glenn of the 36th GA Regt was wounded while in command of the Regt at Vicksburg Mississippi.  He was struck by a canon ball while standing holding the lapel of his coast with his left hand, taking off the thumb and forefinger of the hand and tearing off the large muscle, the deltoid, of the left arm exposing the bone and shoulder joint. The arm and hand are nearly useless.  Having perished a way and shortened considerably he cant hold anything hardly with the hand, having no opposing thumb and finger as the injury necessitated the taking out the entire thumb and finger.  Dalton GA, Dec 8, 1883, J R McAfee MD.
