Columbus Enquirer, Jan 14, 1832:

 

A Post Office has been established at the Uchee Village in Marion County - Wesley Williams, Post Master.

Marion Sales, will be sold on the 1st Tuesday in March next, at the court house in the town of Horry, Marion County, between the usual hours of sale, the following property to wit:

 

One lot of land #224, in the 2nd District of formerly Muscogee, but now Marion County, taken as the property of Wm G Dudly to satisfy a small fifa from a Justices court of Houston County, in favor of David Price vs William G Dudly, levy made and returned to me by a constable.

 

One lot of land #174, in the 2nd District of formerly Muscogee now Marion County taken as the property of Moses Maning and Geo Dykes to satisfy a small fifa from a Justices Court of Wilkinson County in favor of Allen Dykes vs Moses manning and George Dykes, levy made and returned to me by a constable.

Lot of land 171, in the 12th District of formerly Muscogee, but now Marion County, taken as the property of Albert Y Bogan, to satisfy two fifas from a Justice Court in Richmond County, in favor of John Bogan and Elizabeth Bogan, against A Y Bogan; property pointed out by Milton and Lawhorn, plaintiffs attorneys, levy made and returned to me by a constable.

 

Lot of land #92 in the 3rd District of originally Muscogee now Marion County, levied on as the property of Charles M Sledge to satisfy a fifa from Clark Superior Court in favor of E L Newton vs said Sledge; property pointed out by plaintiff.  Wm Williams Jr Deputy Sheriff.

Lot of land #250 in the first district of originally Muscogee, now Marion County, taken as the property of Hiram Wilson to satisfy a small fifa issued from a justices court in Oglethorpe County in favor of Wm S Goss; levy made and returned to me by a constable.

Lot of land #19 in the 3rd District of formerly Muscogee, now Marion County taken as the property of Stephen Marchman and Lewis Daniel to satisfy a small fifa from a Justices Court in Putnam County in favor of Harvey and Dennis vs said Marchman and Daniel.  levy made and returned to me by a constable.

Will be sold at the Court House in the town of Horry, Marion County on the first Tuesday in December next, between the usual hours of sale, the following property to wit:

 

202-1/2 acres of land, known as #22 in the 3rd District of originally Muscogee, now Marion County, levied on as the property of Tilman J French and Michael Felton, to satisfy a fifa from Marion Superior Court, in favor of Mary Ellison, against said French and M Felton security.

 

A negro woman by the name of Nancy, about 40 years of age, and her daughter Nancy, 15 months old, which negroes were taken up in said County by William Wells, Esq more than one year since and have duly advertised and no claimant having appeared, are sold to pay expenses.  Terms cash, Andrew Burns, Sheriff.

One lot of land #244 in the 12th District of formerly Muscogee, now Marion County.  Levied on as the property of Thomas Seates to satisfy a fifa issued from a Justice Court of Meriwether County, in favor of Levi Wellockson, vs said Seates.  Property pointed out by Adam Prewet, Levy made and returned to me by a constable.

 

Lot of land #9, in the 12th District of formerly Muscogee now Marion County.  Levied on as the property of Howel Wells, to satisfy several fifas issued from a Justices Court of Marion County in favor of Willis D Edwards, and others.  Property pointed out by said Edwards.  Levy made and returned to me by a constable.

202-1/2 acres of land known as lot #167 in the 32nd District of originally Lee, but now Marion County levied on as the property of Peter Devearux to satisfy a fifa in favor of the State of Georgia, against said Devearux as Tax Collector of the County of Chatham, pointed out by Taxes Agent.

 

Lot #46 in the 4th District of originally Muscogee but now Marion County. Levied on as the property of David Lagrone to satisfy several small fifas from a justices court in said County in favor of Wm J Wyman and T T Gammage and John Mayo against said Lagrone. Levy made and returned to me by a constable.

 

Lot #9 in the 12th District originally Muscogee but now Marion County, improved. Levied on as the property of Howell Wells to satisfy a fifa for costs.  Levy made and returned to me by a constable.

Property pointed out by plaintiffs attorney and levied on and returned to me by a constable.

Posted before me by one William Barefield of the 741st Dist GM, one bay horse, with a white spot on his forehead, and a snip on his nose, blind in the left eye, about 14 hands high, supposed to be 8 or 9 years old.  Appraised to $35 by William Underwood and William Taylor this May 18, 1833, James Calhoun JP.  The above is a true extract from the Estray Book of Marion County, June 3 1833, Burton Dowd CIC.

 

Posted before me by Thompson Barefield of the 741st District GM one small bay horse about 14 hands high supposed to be about 10 years old; his left hind foot white, with a small stare in his forehead, and a blemish in his right eye, with a very long tail and bushy mane.  Property appraised at $30 by William Taylor and McDonald Page, 25 day (no month) 1833, James Calhoun JP.  The above is a true extract from the Estray Book of Marion County this June 3, 1833.  Burton Dowd CIC

Marion Sheriffs sale: Will be sold at the Court House in Marion County on the first Tuesday in March next between the usual hours of sale, the following property to wit:

202-1/2 acres of land with a small improvement on it, known as number 35 in the 3d Dist of originally Muscogee, but now Marion County levied on as the property of Hugh Morrison to satisfy several fifas from a Justices Court in said County in favor of Wiley and Wesley Williams, against said Morrison.  Levy made and returned to me by a constable. 

101-1/4 acres of land, tolerably well improved, known as #106 in the 4th Dist of originally Muscogee, now Marion County, it being the East half of said lot, levied on as the property of Sherod McGee, to satisfy several fifas from a Justices Court in said County, in favor of Wiley and Wesley Williams, against said McGee; levy made and returned to me by a constable. Columbus Enquirer: May 21, 1834:

States Rights Meeting in Marion County.  At a meeting of a number of citizens of Marion County at Horry, on the 3rd day of March last, William Williams was called to the chair and Elias Jones appointed Secretary, whereupon it was resolved that the chairman appoint a committee to consist of two from each militia district in the county to draft resolutions expressive of the doctrines of the State Rights party of the county, and also to draft a constitution preparatory to the organization of a State Rights Association.  And at a respectable meeting of the Citizens of said County at Horry on the 6th May inst, the time appointed by the former meeting, Wiley Williams, from the committee of 16 appointed at the last meeting, made the following report by order of the committee.   ......... Four months after date application will be made to the honorable the Inferior Court of Muscogee County when sitting as a court of Ordinary for leave to sell lots of land #870 in the 11th Dist, 1st section and #1034 in the 19th Dist 3d section of the Cherokee Purchase, and also #65 in the first district formerly Muscogee, now Marion County, bring the real estate of William Tilly, late of Muscogee County, deceased. Thos B Reese Admr.

Four months after date application will be made to the honorable the Inferior Court of Marion County, when sitting as a Court of Ordinary for leave to sell lot #356, in the 30th District of originally Lee, now Marion County, as the property of John S Martin, deceased, of Sumter County, Lewis Pilsher, Admr.

A Great Bargain Is Offered. 300 acres of swamp land, about 200 of which is first rate river land, about 60 of which is now cleared and in cultivation; also on one -- of upland whereon the subscriber lives, about 20 acres cleared.  The above land lies about 9 miles below the Old Agency on Flint River and can be had very low if applied for shortly.  Also corn, fodder, hogs and cattle can be had on the premises if required.  For particulars apply to Reuben Kaigler on the premises, Margaret Kaigler, Marion County.

A Horse! A Horse!!

Strayed from the subscriber on the 23d inst a bay horse, supposed to be about 5 years old last spring, about 15 hands high, black mane and switch tail, mane parted, a split in each of his hoofs on the fore feet, has quite small eyes, and looks old about the head, is a good saddle horse and works and paces well.  Any information concerning said horse will be thankfully received, and any person taking him up and advising the subscriber thereof will be liberally rewarded, by notifying him at his residence in Marion County.  Joseph C Brooks.

Rule Nisi for foreclosure of Mortgage in Marion Superior Court, March term, 1835.  Gray A Chandler vs Ansell Hudgins.  Upon the petition of Gray A Chandler, shewing that Ansell Hudgins made and executed to him a mortgage deed, on the 4th October 1834 for lot of land #209, in the 3rd Dist originally Muscogee, but now Marion County, for the better security payment of four promissory notes made by the said Hudgins to said Chandler on the day and year aforesaid, and due 25 Dec, thereafter, three of which  notes are for $30 each, and one for $10 making the aggregate $100, and it appearing to the court that said notes have not been paid off and discharged nor any part thereof it is on motion, ordered that said Ansell Hudgins pay into the clerks office of this court, within 6 months, the principal, interest and cost due upon said notes, or that the equity of redemption in and to said mortgaged premises be therefore forever barred and foreclosed, and that this rule be published in the Columbus Enquirer, once a month for four months or personally served three months before the next term.  I do hereby certify that the above is a true copy extracted from the minutes of this court. $25 reward.  Ran away from subscribers Plantation in Marion County, on or about the 5th of this month, two negroes, to wit: a fellow named Moses, about 27 or 28 years old, black complexion, full face, chunky built, weighing about 170 lbs, and a negro woman named Melita about 26 years old, yellow complected and full mouth.  It is supposed that said Negroes are somewhere about Columbus.  The man was bought in Talbot and the woman in Bibb County.  Any informant on concerning said Negroes will be very thankfully received, and the above reward will be paid for their delivery to me in the 1st District of Marion County, on Flint River, or for their confinement in a safe jail and information so that I get them.  Slaughter Hill, Feb 28.

At the Court House in Marion County will be sold at Public sale on the first Tuesday in Sept next within the usual hours of sale.  Lot of land #79, in the 29th Dist of originally Lee, now Marion Co, sold as the property of Whitmill E-- deceased, for the benefit of the creditors of said estate; under an order of Court of Talbot County, Matthew McCrary, Admr in the right of his wife.

 

Rule Nisi to make titles. Marion Co, Inferior Court operating for ordinary purposes, May term 1838 (or 6). Present their Honors Andrew Hood, Thomas Peebles, Samuel Halley, S J Collins and Henry Weddell, Justices etc.  The petition of James Baker respectfully sheweth your honors that Elizabeth Newsom, late of said County, deceased.  Heretofore to wit, on the 8th day of Dec 1836 entered into her certain writing obligatory (called a bond for titles) with your petitioner (a copy of which bond is here to the court shown and whereby the Elizabeth bound herself under penalty and volition? therefore named to make to your petitioner good and lawful titles to a certain lot of land in the 10th Dist of formerly Lee now Randolph Co known in the plan of said dist as lot #187 on a day herein named or when your petitioner should pay her the sum of $500.  And your petitioner further states that the purchase money has been paid and that the said Elizabeth departed this life without executing said titles, according to the condition of her bond.  Wherefore your petitioner prays a rule nisi to be granted requiring Joshua Newsom, administrator upon this estate of said deceased to show causes if say he has on or before August term of this Court whey he shall not be ordered to make titles to your petitioner as aforesaid and according to the provisions of said bond, etc.  G. Thompson Yelverton, Atty for petitioner the Court upon hearing the above petition ordered that the Rule Nisi be granted, and that if no cause be shown to the contrary on or before the next August term of this court, that the said Joshua Newsom, administrator, etc will be instructed to make and execute titles is --- of said bond and this rule be published in one of the public gazettes of said state as by law in such cause directed.  A true extract from the minutes.  B W Dowd CCO.

Guardian Sale: Court of Ordinary of Marion County, will be sold on the first Tuesday in November next at the Court House door in the town of Spring Place, Murray County, lot of land #126 in the 25th Dist and Second section.  Sold for the benefit of Camilla C and James S Parker, orphans.  Wesley Williams, Guardian.

 

Four months after date application will be made to the Honorable the Inferior Court of Marion County when sitting at a court of ordinary for leave to sell a negro man by the name of Poldo?, the property of John Z Ellison, miner of Alexander Ellison deceased, for the use of said minor.  John Giles, Sen, Guardian. Uchee Village July 12.

 

Four months after date application will be made to the court of ordinary of Marion County, for leave to sell to of land number 163 in the 3rd district of said county, as the property of William Miller, late of said county, deceased.  Sold for the benefit of the heirs and creditors.  Casper Headrick, Administrator.  Tazewell, July 12.

Macon Weekly Telegraph, 25 Dec 1838:

A letter to the Editors, from Pond-Town Ga states, that a willful murder was committed in that village on the night of 12th inst., on the body of a traveler named Charles B Harden, a citizen of Paulding County.  He was about 45 years of age, one eye out, stated that he left a wife and six children and a good many relations in Paulding.  He had a road wagon and a number of articles in it.  His money was taken from him by some pick pocket.  He was murdered by a man of the name of Jacob Carter of Marion County without provocation.  The aggressor has been apprehended and lodges in the Marion Jail.

 

Columbus Enquirer,  2 Jan 1839:

 

Murder of Charles B Hardin of Pond Town, Marion County, by Jacob Carter, who shot a pistol ball into the chest.  He expired without a word.

Obituary:

Departed this life at --- o'clock on the --- of 25th inst. Mrs Julia Elizabeth Evans, the wife of John Q Evans of the county of Marion.  Mrs Evans had not attained her twentieth? year ----- (difficult to read).  She left an infant babe of -- days old and a husband whose idol she was to mourn her loss.  The rest is difficult to read, very blurry.

The North half of lot of land #48, in the 30th Dist of originally Lee, now Marion County, 20 acres of which are in cultivation with comfortable cabins thereon

levied on as the property of L---Thrower to satisfy in fifa --- out of the Superior Court of Marion county in favor of W and W Williams vs said Thrower.  Property pointed out by --- Lawhorn.

 

Also 73 acres of land, being part of lot 3 23 in the fourth district of originally Muscogee nor Marion County, it being 73 acres on the East side of said lot, with improvements thereon known as the place formerly owned by Franklin P Hall, levied on as the property of John Smith, to satisfy two fifas from the Superior Court of Marion County in favor of Hill, D---& Co and others vs said Smith.

 

Also one lot of land #240 in the fourth district of originally Muscogee now Marion County, levied on as the property of John Tillery to satisfy sundry fifas in favor of Johnathan Barker and others vs said Tillery.  Property pointed out by the plaintiff.

 

Also lot # 71 in the town of Tazewell, containing five acres, levied on as the property of William Douglass, to satisfy two fifas out of a Justices Court of Marion County, in favor of Isaac Peebles, and one ---out of Inferior Court of said county in favor of John G Waller against and Douglas.  Property pointed out by the defendant, levey made and returned to me by a constable.

 

Also, the north part of lot #7 in the town of Tazewell it being the house and lot occupied by Charner B Strange and A & W Battie and a storehouse levied on as the property of Charner B Strange to satisfy a fifa --- out of the Justices Court of Marion County in favor of James Powers vs said Strange.  Levy made and returned

to me by a constable.

 

Also lot #23 in the town of Tazewell being in the first survey of said town, levied to as the property of George D Browning deceased to satisfy sundry fifas issued out of a Justices Court of Marion Co of Dennis Murdock & Co and others vs said Browning.  Levy made and returned to me by a constable.

 

Also one lot of land #36, in the 11th Dist of originally Muscogee now Marion Co and ----- levied on as the property of Benjamin Jenkins to satisfy two fifas issued out of the Superior Court of Marion County, in favor of --- --- and Joseph Bond, administrators and others vs said Jenkins.  Property pointed out by Perkins.

 

Also two negroes viz: Tou- a man forty five years of age and Latty a woman, 45 years of age, levied on as the property of Samuel Halley to satisfy a fifas issued out of the Superior Court of Marion County in favor of Hill, Dawson & Co and the other in favor of P Guyard vs Samuel Halley and M J Halley, property pointed out by the defendant.  Morgan Kemp, Dep Shff.  July 31.
