4)       Madison McKinney, b 8 Nov 1828, Houston Co GA, married Susan Caroline Swain, 10 July 1849, Marion Co GA; died Apr 16, 1893 Marion Co GA.  He goes to Winn Parish Louisiana ca 1859. Co K., 28th Louisiana Inf, enlisted 17 May 1862 at Monroe LA; paroled as a prisoner of war, 20 June 1865, Alexandria, Louisiana.

5)       Martha Augustus "Gussie", b ca 1832, GA, married Quincy P. Bailey, 29 Mar 1853, Randolph Co GA.

6)       July/Julia Ann, b ca 1834 GA, m John Radney/Rodney, 25 Mar 1860, Randolph Co GA.

7)       William Preston, b July 10, 1838, married Mary Catherine Matthew.  Enlisted as a private Co K, 7th Regt GA State Troopers, 21 Oct 1861; mustered out at Camp Brown GA 20 Apr 1862.  Enlisted as a private in Co B, 11th Battn GA Inf 25 Apr 1862.  Transferred to Co B, 47th GA Inf, May 12, 1862 to Co A, 1st Battn, GA Sharpshooters 1 Aug 1862.  Appointed Sergeant 29 Aug 1862.  Wounded 31 Aug 1864, no later war record., died 14 Jan 1925, Webb, AL

8)       Henry Clay - twin - b 26 Apr 1843, Marion Co GA, married Georgia Eliza Hay, 19 Mar 1873, Randolph Co GA, d 18 Sept 1883, Randolph Co GA.  Private in Co K, 7th Regt, GA St Troops 21 Oct 1861.  Mustered out at Camp Brown GA, 20 Apr 1862.  Enlisted as private Co B, 47th Regt GA Infantry 16 May 1862.  Transferred to Co A, 2st Battn GA Sharpshooters 30 July 1862.  Roll Call for Aug 1864 "Sick in hospital".  No further civil war record.

9)       Elbert Greene - twin - b 26 Apr 1843, Marion Co GA  Private in Co K, 7th Regt GA St Troops 21 Oct 1861, mustered out at Camp Brown GA 20 Apr 1862.  Enlisted as private, Co B, 47th Regt GA Infantry 16 May 1862.  Transferred to Co A, 1st Battn Ga Sharpshooters 30 July 1862.  Roll Call for Aug 1864 shows him present - no further civil war record.

1825: Dec 5: Deed Book C, Houston Co GA:  Elbert Melton, witness to deed between Larkin Griffin of Twiggs (Grantor) and Simon Taylor of Twiggs (Grantee), Lot 77, in 13th Dist of Houston Co for $100.00.

 

1826, 13 Sept: Elbert Melton is on a list of customers in Twigg County, GA at store of Ira Peck.

 

1831, 15 Feb: Houston Co. page 128-132, Book "A" Sales and Appraisements of Estates: John Fletcher, Adm for James G. Parks "book accounts"  were.........McKinne Milton, Elbert Milton, widow Melton, Matthew Milton, Catharine Melton among others.

24 Nov 1838: Elbert Melton witnessed deed in Randolph Co GA between John Hanks of Chamber Co AL and Lewis Everingham, Dist 5, Lot 146.

 

1840 census: 710th Dist, Marion Co GA, page 72:

Elbert Melton: 2 males under 5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 30-40.

 

1841: July 1st: Elbert Mellon on a list of letters remaining at the post office at Tazewell, Marion County, GA.  Shown in the Columbus newspaper.

 

1842: Wens Aug 3: Notice: “I forewarn all persons from trading for 4 promissory notes made payable to Elbert Melton.  The said notes were made by me and given for the hire of a Negro man Reddick.  The boy was hired from Ambrose Jones, agent for his children.  Jones has left the state and the Negro has left me, and has been taken up and put in the Tazewell jail, and had a letter in his possession and pass.  Elbert Melton, the holder of said notes, has levied an attachment on said Negro.  The consideration for which said notes were given having failed, I am determined not to pay them unless compelled by law.  (signed) Calvin D. 1844: August 17: Marion County, GA, Inventories and Appraisments, Book A, page 239: G. H. Sims, Elbert Melton and Mathew Melton were appraisers for Flewellin P. Story.

 

1846: 25 April: Marion Co GA: Between Elbert Melton of Marion Co to Jacob A. Clements of Marion Co GA, for $4,000 for the north 1/2 of lot 240 and the north half of lot 209 in 5th Dist., witnessed Wm. C. Dowd and Kinchen McKinney J.P.  Signed Elbert Melton, recorded Nov 4, 1846 (I have copy)
