"The War with the Creek Indians in 1836 brought many substantial settlers to this section.  Soldiers who marched through this fertile district saw that this county was a

desirable place to live; so when the hostilities closed and they returned to their homes in different parts of the state, they soon made plans to buy land in Marion.  In the late

thirties and early forties many veterans of this war made their homes in this county.  Among these were C. H. McCall, George Champion, Alfred Champion, Chapman

Maddux, William M. Brown, John Hollis, Joel Rushin, Tennerson Smith, S. C. Crawford and many others"
