20 Apr 1945 A(+)/193d Tk Bn, with a strength of approx 30 tanks, attacks down Route 5- Kakazu branch road with the objective of reaching the village of Kakazu. The attack is “the first strickly armored warefre practiced thus far in the small island warfare in the Pacific.” CPT Harry R. McAmick is commander of A Co. At 0830, A Co breaks through Route 5, but misses the trail off of Route 5 that leads into Kakazu and enters the zone occupied by 96th Inf Div along Rotation Ridge. When the mistake is discovered, CPT McAmick leads the company back up Route 5 and finds the trail. Between 1000 and 1330, A(+)/193d Tk Bn, unsupported by infantry which had failed to get over Kakazu Ridge, occupies the village of Kakazu. During this action, the village is “utterly destroyed” by the tanks. Although A Co successfullydrives Japanese forces from Kakazu, the 1-105th IN is unable to link up with the tanks and at 1330, 105th IN Reg authorizes A/193d Tk Bn to withdraw. The withdrawal is accomplished by 1530 hrs.
Of 30 vehicles, 22 are knocked out of action; only 8 return to the assembly area. Some of the tankers remain hidden in Kakazu until 24 Aug 1945 when they are rescued by 1-105th IN |

?? 1945 (Tanks of 193d Tk Bn are redistributed to other TUSA units.) At the end of the battle for Okinawa, only 3 of the 16 tanks assigned to A/193d Tk Bn were still operational. Most of the tanks were lost during the attack on Kakazu Ridge and the battle for the airfield near Naha. (The 193d Tk Bn remained on Okinawa until its transfer to Vancouver Barracks in 1946. A/193d was bivouacked across the road from the Navy long range radio station which relayed the message from Washington to FADM Nimitz of the Japanese Surrender. At the end of the War only four [Sidney Abernathy, Lovell Dunnigan, George Ivey, and Smarr] of the 70 officers and men who mobilized in Forsyth, Ga in 1941 remained in the unit. These four were rotated home and discharged prior to the 193d Tk Bn’s return to the U.S.) |
