MUSCOGEE COUNTY GEORGIA

About Georgia USGenWeb | Georgia Counties Index

Trish Elliott-Kashima, County Coordinator
Paula Perkins, State Coordinator
Rebecca Maloney, Assistant State Coordinator

Welcome to the Muscogee County GAGen Web Project

My name is Trish Elliott-Kashima and I am County Coordinator for this site. This is a free site. All information on this site was submitted by volunteers. I appreciate all the work that Kemis Massey did for this site in the past. In order for the site to be truly helpful to all, it needs to contain a wide variety of information including the history of the county, vital statistics and family histories. So, PLEASE share your family and county history with others. Help me make it the best site we can. Please note I am revamping this site and you may find broken links until I have updated everything.

If you have books on Muscogee County and are willing to help others find their Muscogee Roots, please let me know. I will set up a separate page to show that.

Come back and visit as I will be adding things to the site. Suggestions are WELCOME!! If you have something you would like to see on this site, please let me know.

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GEORGIA HISTORY

Originally Muscogee County was created December 11, 1826, originally covering 2,000 square miles of Indian territory between the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers. It was named for the native Muscogee or Creek people. The land was ceeded by eight of the chiefs among the Creek in the Treaty of Indian Springs. The Creek Nation declared it illegal because it did not represent the majority of the people. The following year the US Government negoiated another treaty. The boundaries of Muscogee County was created by the Georgia General Assembly. Parts of Muscogee Co were later taken for the creation of other counties, so please check those additional counties for information on your families. Columbus was and is the County seat. .

Current Neighboring Counties:

Counties in Georgia: Chattahoochee, Harris, Marion, Talbot.

Counties in Alabama: Lee, Russell.
