1884 FARMERS |

FREE INFORMATION - SHARED BY RESEARCHERS ON GAGENWEB PROJECT
Thanks to John Mallory LAND for submitting this to thelist.
[Compiler’s notes: a more accurate title for this list might beOwners of Agricultural Land in Muscogee County."] It appears that the list is basedon the tax rolls, specifically the owners (or agents representing them for legalor tax purposes) of land situated in Muscogee County that was used solely or primarily for agriculture. Not all of the persons on this list were actually engaged in farming, and evidently many farmers in Muscogee County (renters or sharecroppers) do not appearon this list. This may in part account for the significant degree of discrepancy between this1884 list and an 1883 list of Muscogee County farmers that provided names only, as many entries on this 1884 list do not seem to correspond with an entry on the1883 list and vice versa. The source for the 1883 list is not readily evident. The Columbus Post Office served a portion of Muscogee County beyond the city limitsof Columbus. The area served by the Bozeman Post Office perhaps corresponded with Georgia Militia District #921 (Bozeman District), which was south of Columbus; the area served by the Edwards Post Office perhaps corresponded with Georgia MilitiaDistrict #1128 (Edwards District), east of Columbus; and the area served by the UpatoiePost Office perhaps corresponded with Georgia Militia District #675 (Upatoie District)in far northeastern Muscogee County. Other Georgia Militia Districts in Muscogee Countyinclude #774 (Steam Mill District), northeast of Columbus, and #772 (Nances District),north of Columbus. abbreviations: (c) = Colored (non-White) Surname, given name, (race) / title or capacity (if any), # acres, value in $, P.
