Double Churches - Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Mt. Moriah Primitive Baptist Church

Thank you for sharing this information! GLADYS J. MAY"

Double Churches got its name because there are two churches there, just a few hundred yards apart. Their actual address is on Double Churches Road nearer to Columbus than Fortson.

My husband's g g g g'father, John T. Lokey, gave land for the churches and the cemetery for $1 as long as it was used for "religious purposes." A family story tells thatJohn T. and his brother William had a falling out over the two churches. In fact, from what I've heard, feelings ran high over family members changing from one church to the other. If I remember correctly, William gave the land for the school.

The part of the cemetery closest to Mt. Moriah is where the oldest graves are located. John T. is buried in that part. William is in the part next to Mt. Zion. I guess there was an invisible line running through the cemetery!

The history of Mt Zion has been written by Kathleen Overby. Her husband Otis is the caretaker of the cemetery. We have attended services at Mt Zion and had a Lokey reunion there in 1999.

We still have a couple of copies of the Double Churches Cemetery book ($10 including mailing). In the back are comments on the families buried there, written by a man who grew up in that area.
