THE COLUMBUS ENQUIRER

Celebrated 150 years by running a supplement to The Sunday Ledger-Enquirer entitled the Sesquicentennial Collection.  The series began on April 16,1978, with a forward from the Sesquicentennial Editor, Clason Kyle. 

  • Sesquicentennial - April 16, 1978
    Here is the ad for Spencer & Oliver.  John Berrien Oliver married Virginia Augusta Shorter, daughter of Judge Eli Sims Shorter.  She died young and I last find JBO in Columbus in the 1860 census along with their daughter, Virginia Augusta II (my great-grandmother).  JBO apparently served in the Confederated Army and after the war he bought the newspaper in Tallahassee, The Florida Sentinel.  He sold the paper in 1868.  His daughter continued to live in Columbus with her mother's sister, Mary Jane and her husband Dr. John Urquhart both of whom are buried at Linwood Cemetery.
