The following letter was authored by Andrew Jackson Robinett of the 59th Georgia Infantry. It was to be delivered to Daniel James of the 12th Georgia to send home to Daniel's father. Daniel was killed in a railroad accident en route from Richmond to Lynchburg, Virginia on July 21, 1862. This letter was submitted to the Georgia Department of Archives and History by Catherine Harris of Leesburg, GA in 1964

Dear friend I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you no how I am getting along.  I am well at this time and I hope that these few lines may find you injoying the same blesing. I reseived your letter and was glad to hear that you and family was all well. Tell fathers family that I am well. I hant got anyting to write that would interest you onley that we are building a fort. There has been two thousand men working on it about three weeks. I think we will have it done in a short time now. We don't stop for Sunday. I think when we get that done we will be safe hear. There is twelve yankey vessels in site of this fort we are building. They fiared at one of our vessels yesterday but they don no

 

damedge. I was sorry to hear that your gin house got burnt and was glad to hear that you did not loose more than what you did. I hope that you will find the theif that fired it if anybody don it and he may suffer according to the crime. We have a preacher in our ridgment. We have preaching twice a week. He is an excellent preacher. He is a Methodist. I want you to write to me how wheat crops look in that settlement. I want you to write to me if any boddy have planted any corn ther yet. I want you to write me as soon as you get this and write all the good news. I will come to a close for nothing more at present. A.J. Robinett To Daniel James
