Confederate Cemetery aka Patrick Cleburne Cemetery

The Patrick Cleburne Cemetery is located where the old train depot was in Jonesboro. There are estimated to be 600 and 1000 soldiers buried there, but no list is available at this time.

The first person buried there was a Brooks that was wounded at the battle of Ezra Church. He died on the train so when the train arrived in Jonesboro, they buried him in a field.

Lindsay, Robert Henry b. August 15, 1842. d. August 31, 1864. Confederate soldier, Civil War. Winner of the Confederate "Medal of Honor." Lindsay was the color-bearer of the Fourth Kentucky Infantry Regiment, Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade. He carried the colors in every battle from Shiloh until his death during the Atlanta Campaign. He was twice named to the Confederate Roll of Honor, a very rare distinction. He was mortally wounded while carrying the colors of his regiment in an assault during the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia. (bio by G. Walden) Confederate Cemetery, Jonesboro, Georgia, USA.

Cause of Death: gunshot wound in battle.

Crawford-Dorsey Cemetery

This cemetery is located in Land Lot 124 of the 6th district of Clayton County, Lovejoy, Georgia. (This area was formerly located in Henry County, GA). I75S to Exit 71. West on Jonesboro/McDonough Road. Cemetery is located on right just after E. Lovejoy Road, several yards off McDonough Road behind a cattle gate that encloses the Clayton County Reservoir. The address is 21 McDonough Road. This cemetery is active.

The Crawford-Dorsey family have a large history in Clayton/Henry County, as noted in "The History of Clayton County, Georgia, 1983." Detailed information can be obtained in this publication. The Crawford & Dorsey families grew up together and two of them united the families in marriage.

Buried in this cemetery are the following:

Thomas Shanklin Crawford (son of William & Mary Shanklin Crawford), with wife Althea Frances Dorsey (with her parents John Dorsey & wife Mary Phillips Dorsey, grandfather Isham Phillips).

Althea's brother Stephen Green Dorsey (with wife Lucinda C. McConnell, her parents James McConnell & Mary V. Newell McConnell) and his children: Catherine with 1st husband Dr. Thomas Bailey Slaughter (son of A. E. Bradley); their child Katie Tommie, and 2nd husband William T. Fullerton; their children Annie F. & husband W. P. Howard, John Joseph (with wife Nora Lee).

John J. (with wife Nancy Caroline Raven); children Ada (wife of Jessie Roan) & Lizzie (wife of W. Roan).

William Henry (with wife Sarah Adella Raven (who later married ? Crittenden)); their children Mattie Electra (wife of Ed. R. Hightower) & William Henry (with wife Nancy Hayden Christian). William & Nancy's children Lizzie Ray (with husband Lewis Hill Roan), Reuben Glenn (with wife Leone Daniel), & Mildred Lois Herrington Dorsey (wife of William Frank).

According to records, the following four individuals are buried in this cemetery; however, no head stones were noted.
1. William Crawford (03/07/1778 - 04/19/1840)
2. Mary Shanklin Crawford (12/25/1788-04/04/1850)
3. John Dorsey (08/03/1780-01/18/1870)
4. Mary Dawson Phillips (wife of Isham) (dates unknown)
There are several old graves marked with huge slabs made out of brick/mortar covered with shells. The headstones are not discernible, so these may be the above individuals' markers.

John E. Dorsey b. 12/02/1888 d. 08/25/1875 is the youngest child of John J. Dorsey and wife Nancy Caroline Raven Dorsey. The line identifying which children of John J. and Nancy Caroline are also buried in the cemetery should read: John J. (with wife Nancy Caroline Raven); children Ada (wife of Jessie Roan); Lizzie (wife of W. Roan) & John E. Dorsey. (John E. is buried in the same family unit enclosure as John J. & Nancy.) Note: John J. and Nancy had two additional children who are not buried in this cemetery. They are sons Percy and Rufus Dorsey and the oldest of their children & my grandmother Lou Ida (wife of Samuel Norris Thompson).

Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery

The Flat Rock Baptist Church was founded on this location in 1875 within the City of College Park. Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport is adjacent to this site to the North. The church sold its property to the City of Atlanta and reformed as The National Heights Baptist Church and moved to another location. This Cemetery is "owned" by the City of Atlanta. The surrounding community has been condemned and torn down to make room for a 5th runway at the airport. It is felt that this cemetery is in danger of being moved or surrounded by airport.

Kimberley Cemetery

The old Kimberly Family Cemetery which was located on what was originally Kimberly property was unceremoniously uprooted for a Hartsfield International Airport (now Fulton County Airport) runway expansion.

Original Legal Description: Beginning at an iron pin on the East side of Clayton Street 378 feet of the Southeast corner of Clayton Street and Hillside Drive; running thence South 89 degrees 25 minutes 29 seconds East 150.41 feet to an iron pin; thence South 89 degrees 51 minutes 45 seconds West 179.22 feet to a point on the Southeast side of Clayton Street; thence North 4. Degrees 37 minutes 20 seconds East along the Southeast side of Clayton Street 42.28 feet to an iron pin marking a corner in said street; thence North 00 degrees 31 minutes 00 seconds East along the East side of Clayton Street 160.13 feet to the point of beginning.

The City of Atlanta notified known descendants of its Notice of Condemnation: Civil Action, No. 12007 on record shows the City of Atlanta as Plaintiff and Edna E. Kimberly, et al (selected family spokesperson) as Defendants. The Superior Court for the County of Clayton, State of Georgia Civil Action, File Number 12,007 shows City of Atlanta, Condemnore vs. Mrs. Edna E. Kimberly, et al, Condemnees. Nothing could be done by family members to save the old pristine family burial ground.

Forest Hills Memorial Gardens records: On 26 March 1970 we moved the following people from a graveyard for the expansion of the Hartsfield Airport. We also know that the cost was $200. per grave site, which included the actual move, the new lot, and a plain marker.

The many unmarked graves were given no consideration. The City of Atlanta, Fulton County, Fulton County Airport, and Clayton County Superior Court all deny any knowledge of the whereabouts of the original tombstones or photos taken before or during the move. I was told that it was customary to take a cupful of dirt from three feet in front of the existing tombstone, marking it, and transferring it to the new burial site. All dates and words of respect and love placed by family members seem to be gone forever. Also, by reading my notes below it becomes obvious that a less than efficient job was done in the record keeping of the Atlanta Airport Authority.

The following 14 graves appear to have been moved
C.E. Kimberly
* Charles Edward Kimberly 1828/1893, served in the C.S.A. Co. E, 27th Ga. Infantry
Evelyn Kimberly
* wife of Charles Edward Kimberly

Almeater B. Kimberly
* 1st wife of Charles Edward Kimberly, the son of Charles & Evelyn Kimberly. Maiden name: Beasley

Baby Kimberly
* son of Charles & Almeater Kimberly

Morris E. Kimberly
*son of Sherman Edward Kimberly, accidentally shot while on a Thanksgiving family hunting trip by a Beasley cousin.

Edna E. Kimberly
* wife of Morris E. Kimberly

Mary Jewel Brooks

Wade Cater

Isaac D. Kimberly
*Isaac Dickson Kimberly, son of James Marion & Nancy Anne Kimberly
*Interesting note: Isaac is listed on the original papers as having been moved from the old Kimberly Cemetery, however he did not die until 1980

Child of Ike Kimberly
*Not listed on some documents, listed on others, has grave stone reading "Child of Ike Kimberly" at Forest Hills
Baby of Ike Kimberly

Mary Anderson
*daughter of Charles Edward Kimberly, married John W. Anderson

Cintea K. Anderson
*Karen Smith's notes: daughter of Mary

Unknown Baby
*Not listed on some documents, listed on others, has grave stone reading "Unknown Baby" at Forest Hills

Forest Hills - Kimberly Family tombstones surveyed and pictured 18 November 1989 by Gayle Lee-Johnson and Jennifer Johnson. Gayle looks forward to correspondence with family and can be reached at ivyj3@mindspring.com -- Much thanks and appreciation to Karen Smith, whom we consider to be "the guru" of Kimberly information!

Note: While the uprooting of an old cemetery is a tragedy in and of itself, the Kimberly and other related families now face the certainty that two more of its beautiful and historical resting places are about to meet the same fate. It appears that the airport needs more runways and that more of our ancestors are in the way. Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery and the old Hart Family Cemetery are both slated to be either moved or find themselves surrounded by planes taking off and landing. These two graveyards contain hundreds of grave sites, both marked and unmarked. --Gayle Lee-Johnson

South Family Cemetery

Cemetery is located on East Fairview Rd. in Clayton County. It is about 1/2 mile above or before you get to Thurmond Rd. It sits barely off the road and is walled by rock and cement blocks. There are at least 8 to 10 unmarked graves in this cemetery. I named it the "South Family" as that is mostly what the marked graves are.

There are two (2) above ground concrete looking tombs without names. The last marked activity on this cemetery is 30 August 1907. There is supposed to be There is a Masonic Marker: Daylight Masonic Lodge #125 F&AM that has been erected in this cemetery. [Note: I have searched for the marker and Masonic Lodge on-line and can't locate either.]
