The first three census schedules for Georgia are missing. A total of seventeen volumes of 1790-1820 censuses were lost by the federal government, evidently before 1895, and the cause is unknown. Wills, deeds, tax digests, court minutes, voter's lists, and newspapers have been searched to compile a reconstructed 1790 listing. Due to the nature of the search, it is not possible to determine if there are duplicate names. While Columbia county was not formed until 10 Dec 1790, and there wouldn't have been a 1790 census - it was still included. SOURCE: The Reconstructed 1890 Census of Georgia Substitutes for Georgia's Lost 1790 Census Compiled by Marie DeLamar & Elizabeth Rothstein Baltimore - Genealogical Publishing Co,, Inc 1989 It would be impossible to reconstruct a complete 1790 census of Columbia County, due to the loss of so many records during this period. The statistics of the 1790 census escaped the fire when the British burned Washington. The total population of Richmond County includes what would become Columbia County. Likewise, Wilkes County population includes what would become Elbert County. This is the population of each existing county within Georgia: |
