This family had the harrowing experience of surviving a tornado. According to Betty, September 28, 1963 started as a routine Saturday of cleaning and cooking. Then, as an omen of things to come, the electric power went off. Cleaning, cooking and TV cartoons came to a sudden halt. Kay (Karon) then went up the road to her grandma's (Marie Bargeron) to play wither her cousin, Cindy Johnson. Cindy's brother, Bill, went to Betty's house to play with Howell. Late in the afternoon, just before supper, Grandma Bargeron and Cindy came to Betty's house to get a cup of grits (Kay had stayed at her Grandma's with her aunt and uncle, Joyce and Jim Johnson). Betty and Warren were visiting with Grandma and Cindy in the living room when all of a sudden, the wind began to blow with tremendous force, creating a terrible and indescribable noise. Stepping outside, Betty looked skyward, only to have most of the view cut off by the huge oak trees that surrounded the house. She could, however, see that the smoke-black clouds were "boiling" rapidly. The wind was accompanied by heavy rain, so Betty proceeded to close up the house. Almost immediately, the house began to spin very rapidly--so rapidly that no one could move. Without warning, the whole house exploded. Betty found herself in the yard in a somewhat dazed state. She looked around and saw that everyone was moving about. While only a few seconds had passed, at first no one knew where they were. They just knew that they were happy and thankful to be alive. In Betty's words, "Right then we didn't care that the house, trees and cars were in a huge pile of wreckage. We knew someone had taken care of us. God had made a door for us and had place us in the yard only a few feet from each other. We were lucky to have all of our family alive. We were very, very thankful." [The only injuries suffered by anyone were a few cuts and scratches. Within a few days, an Augusta newspaper published a photograph of what had been the Bargeron's home and there in the middle of the former living room, stood the TV set with a bud vase containing a rose atop it. Neither had been moved and both were intact].

William: Associate in Arts, Brewton-Parker Junior College; Bachelor of Science (education), University of Georgia. o. Sports Director, Outdoor Recreation Director and Deputy Director, Community Recreation Division, Ft. Stewart, Georgia; former pitcher, Los Angeles Dodgers farm system. Member, U. S. Army Reserve, 1961-66. During his high school years (Bradwell Institute), William (known as "Nig"), won 14 letters in four sports. He was known throughout the state as an outstanding prep athlete, competing on several championship basketball, baseball and track teams, in addition to receiving all-state honorable mention honors as a football fullback (he also handled the punting duties, averaging 42 yards). In 1957, he co-captained the South's All-Star baseball team, which defeated the North, 2-1, in Cracker Park in Atlanta. In between his sports activities, he served as president of his class the last three years, sports editor and business manager of the school yearbook and was a member of the National Beta Club, a high school honor society. At Brewton-Parker he was named "Mr. Brewton-Parker College" by his fellow students, was on the Dean's List and was a starter in basketball and baseball. He next enrolled at the University of Georgia on a combination baseball-basketball scholarship. Upon college graduation, he was signed to a $20,000 bonus contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his pro career, he was assigned to the Spokane, WA, Grand Forks, ND, Albuquerque, NM, Atlanta, GA and Salisbury, NC teams. At various times his teammates included Sandy Koufax, Jim Palmer and Tommy Lasorda. In 1963 he was 14-9 with a 2.80 ERA with Salisbury; in 1964 he was 14-6 at Grand Forks with a 1.65 ERA, second only within the Dodgers' organization to Sandy Koufax who had a 1.61 ERA. After the 1964 season, in which he had 190+ strikeouts, William was named Class A Pitcher of the Year by "The Sporting News". According to a newspaper article, he quit baseball "because I felt I wouldn't be a superstar. The Dodgers already had Koufax, [Don] Drysdale and [Claude] Osteen and some pretty good minor league pitchers--with Sutton heading the list." Lynda: Bachelor of Science (business education), Georgia Southern University. o. Educational guidance counselor and education program manager, Ft. Stewart, GA. r. Hinesville, GA.
