Sara: o. Accounting technician, U. S. Government (retired). Melvin: o. Sales Representative, Atlanta Gas Light Co. (retired). Joined the U. S. Navy in January 1943 and received basic training in Baltimore, MD. After reassignment to Norfolk, VA, he was sent to New York and then shipped to England. He participated in the Normandy Invasion while serving on LST 376. On the the third day of the invasion, his ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine. At the time, Melvin's ship was transporting troops to the Normandy Beach and many men were lost. The crew and troops did, however, have time to get a few life rafts into the water before the ship sunk. Melvin and others hung onto the sides of the rafts for about 8 hours before being rescued by a British destroyer and transported back to England. To compound the tragedy, many of those who had survived the sinking became tired while hanging onto the rafts and simply slid off and drowned. While in England, before being assigned to another ship, Melvin experienced the constant air raids and bombing of England by Germany. He was later reassigned to another LST for the duration of the war in Europe. He then returned to the United States and was shipped to China before being discharged in February 1947. r. He was then assigned to Baltimore, MD and Turner AFB, GA where his wing's mission in a new aircraft (RB-57D) was reconnaissance. This aircraft was a forerunner to the U-2 spy plane.
