As a sergeant with the Georgia State Patrol, Willie (as he was known by his friends), was presented with the Governor's Safety Trophy in a ceremony in the Governor's office. The award was in recognition of a 30% decrease in traffic fatalities in Sgt. Hall's district during the year 1957. His district included Liberty, Long, Bryan and Chatham counties. Fannie: o. George Patton's 5th Army, Jim and his unit participated in five major battles: Normandy Invasion, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe, for which he received five battle stars. During the Battle of the Bulge [as related to the compiler by Jim's brother, Royce], he was forced on more than one occasion to hide in "potato cellars" in order to avoid capture by the German forces. He was a turret gunner on a carrier-based torpedo bomber. He saw combat action in the Marshall Islands, Marianas Group and Leyte Gulf campaigns.
