p.375, 17 day 1st month 1798, John Crew manumits negro girl Betty Thomas 9 years on 3d day 7th month last.

Deed Book 6, 1816-24, p.351, 20 April 1820, Whereas I Jesse Willis a free man of colour have purchased my wife Letty Willis of Henry Dick of Caroline County to she belongs as a slave the sum of $100 and being desirous to emancipate her.

p. 57 articles of agreement between Thomas Lee Shippen of Philadelphia and his slave John Green whereby Green agrees to serve for 7 years from date of articles as a hostler and Shippen agrees to find him in his dwelling house, sufficient meat, drink, washing and lodging and if Green is not willing to serve beyond the seven years to give 6 months notice 17 Nov 91 rec same Green signs with mark

p. 328 James Bradley of Chas City frees Negro man James Roberts aged abt 50-31 Dec 96 rec 16 Feb 1797

p. 372 Hardyman Irby of Chas City having this day purchased a female slave of Otway Byrd by the name of Eliza and a part of the consideration of which purchase is that the said slave is to have her freedom at the end of five years from this date together with all her future increase so she is to be free in five years unless Irby dies before then and in that case to be immediately free 23 Nov 1797 rec 18 Jan 1798

Warren of New Kent and at whose death at the division of his estate fell to my wife who was Mary Warren dau of said Robt C. p. 108 will of William Clarke of Chas City leaves to wife Ann land and Lucy, Charles, Jenny and Rhoda after wife s death the slaves to be free as they arrive of lawful age and if Charles should not be of age then his bro Edward Clarke to have him until is of age of 21- if Jenny and Rhoda not of age then to Benj Lennard until they arrive at 21 Negro woman Rachel to be sold for the payment of debts 15 May 1792 rec 16 Aug 1792

p. 184 will of Richardson Walker of Chas City and parish of Westover I give to my four slaves, Abigail and her three daughters named Lilly, Tabitha and Abigail their freedom after my death I give to the aforesaid Abigail and her three daughters my whole estate wants execs to get some place such as they shall think proper for Abigail and her children to reside on and that they may all live together in peace and in a Christian like manner names Benj McWilliams and Boling Cocke as execs 22 Sept 93 rec 16 Oct 94

p. 204 will of John Benford of Chas City my will and desire is that my four Negroes David, Maggy, Jacob and Kate may have their freedom and be intitled to all the estate they may hereafter acquire 12 Feb 1780-rec 19 Feb 1795 [note 1780 date]

p. 205 will of David Wilkinson of Chas City desires his two Negro men viz Sampson and Daniel should have their freedom and not serve in slavery to no person after my death 2 Sept 85 rec 19 Feb 95

p. 215 will of Joseph Bradley of Chas City leaves Negro man Charles to two of his children Nancy and Williamson Bradley for ten years and then to be free lends Negro woman Easter to dau Mary for ten years and then to be free 28 Feb 95 rec 16 July 95

p. 469 will of Ann Shields Minge of Chas City and parish of Westover item my common clothes I desire should be given to such of the Negroes as my dear Momma should think proper item I desire that all my Negroes that were left me by my dear papa should together with their present and future increase to be liberated after my death by y executors hereafter named wants a liberal fee given to minister for preaching funeral sermon "as also the negro s which bears me to the grave be rewarded" appts father, Collier Harrison, Jn Minge and Geo W.H. Minge her execs 16 July 98 rec 20 Mar 1800

p. 500 I William Nelson junior of Chas City do hereby manumit and set free Michael the son of Betty by virtue of my power as his owner and according to an act of assembly in that case made and provided given under my hand and seal this 16 June 1800 rec 19 June 1800 clerk calls this a deed of manumission

p. 605 will of Thos Ballard of Chas City and Westover parish having an old Negro man slave named George who has been a faithful servant I desire and hereby give him the said Negro slave his freedom after my death in a perfect and just meaning of liberation and in as full and perfect manner as any law could authorise me 13 Aug 1804 rec 20 Sept 1804

p. 633 will of William B. Christian of Chas City leaves slaves to wife and niece it is my will and desire that my Negro woman named Mourning should be emancipated and set at liberty 21 Aug 1805 rec 17 Oct 1805

p. 668 will of James Ladd of Chas City mentions shoe and boot making business known by name of Joseph Ladd and Co Wills plantation lands etc to heirs then says my will and desire is that Robin Davy & Billy miners and Black Boys under my care should be educated at the expence of my estate at the discression of my exec ..so as not to amount to less than 12 months schooling each these three might be free black boys apprenticed to him by court or parents? 6 July 1806 rec 21 Nov 1806 Will Book 2, 1808-24 p. 69 estate pays Jas D. Ladd for boarding and schooling Davy 5 months and paid Robt Crew for boarding Davy to go to school to Benj Crew acct Jas D. Ladd id d as treasurer of the yearly meeting so probably Quaker--

Charles City County Will Book No. 2 1808-1824 LVA Film #8

p. 18 will of David Roper of Chas City leaves specific slaves to particular heirs my desire is that my Man Fill and his wife live or continue with my son John Roper, but not as slaves, but to do moderate labour, and should they live to become chargeable in the Judgment of my execs then in that case, they shall be maintained out of my estate 15 April 1808 rec 21 July 1808

p. 20 will of Anthony Tucker Dixon I hereby emancipate liberate and set free forever a little girl living with my friend Saml Tyler called Patty daughter of Molly, to whom I devise a legacy of two hundred pounds to be raised from the debts due me: to be paid to S. Tyler, Esq as soon as collection can be made and applied by him towards her maintenance and education in the way he may judge best 28 Feby 1794 rec 18 Aug 1808

p. 444 will of Philip J. Lightfoot my will and desire is that my faithful servant Corneleus shall at my death be free and entirely released from bondage 16 June 1819 rec 15 July 1819
