Michael Nicholls & Lenaye Howard, Utah State University, abstracted Deeds and Wills for Dinwiddie, Prince George, Chesterfield, Charles City, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, & Sussex Counties. Manumission and abolition are both used to mean "freeing slaves" or "a release from slavery." More specifically though, manumission is the act of a slave owner setting slaves free, while emancipation (and abolition) involve government action. The following counties may not be all inclusive of Wills and Deeds. Researchers should check with the County Courthouse to review the documents on file there. |
