Deed Book 13, 1779-1784 page 246, I Thomas Pleasants, Junr., of Goochland County being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all Mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done in the like situation, and having under my care twenty Negroes of the following names and ages; vizt: Bridget about seventy, Ben forty-six, Cupid forty-one, Roger thirty-three, Frank thirty-five, Charles twenty-nine, Miles thirty-five, Jobass thirty-one, Jack twenty-two, Maria fifty, Aggy forty-four, Judith thirty-nine, Fanny forty-one, Cloe thirty-seven, Phillis thirty-one, Sylvia twenty-nine, Patience twenty-three, Balinda thirty, Avarilla thirty-one, Daphne, thirty-six...and having thirty-nine Negroes now in their minority of the following names and ages; vizt.: Roger seventeen, David sixteen, David fifteen, Ned fourteen, Gale seven, Jack nine, Sam six, Frederick four, Jacob twelve, Bob ten, James Eleven, Lewis eleven, Juba thirteen, Dick eleven, Jo Cooper twelve, Nancy sixteen, Clarissa fourteen, Bridget ten, Dick nine, Jane seven, Louise three, Peggy seventeen, Aggy eight, Nancy five, Lucy three, George 1-3/4, Molly 1-1/2, Ovid 1/2, Fanny 1/2 and everyone of them hereby emancipated and set free when they shall arrive of lawful age, the males twenty-one and the females eighteen. 21 10th Month 1782. I Mary Youngblood of the county of Goochland being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that is tis my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care seven Negroes whom I have heretofore held as slaves Parrot aged about forty, Sophia twenty eight, Sall Cooper twenty three, Sarah forty five, Ovid twenty five, Dinah twenty two, Arthur twenty one they being given me by my mother Mary Pleasants (devised by her late husband Thomas Pleasants of Henrico County) by deed of gift of 8 Seventh Month called July 14 July 1781. 21 October 1781. recorded 21 October 1781. p.250, I Benjamin Walker of Goochland County being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be don by in the like situation and having under my care three Negores whom I have heretofore held as slaves Lewis 35, Lydia 36, Jane 19. I hereby emancipate and set free all and every one of the above named slaves and also having six Negroes now in their minority Frank 17, Phillis 10, Isham 9, Jacob 5, Nancy 3, Silvia 2 weeks, etc. p.257, I James Hunnicutt of Goochland County being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I would desire to be done by in the like situation and having under my care five Negroes whom I have heretofore held as slaves; Vizt.: Nathan Freeman (30), Peter Still (29), Robin Still (24), Lettice James (33), Patt Still (29), I hereby emancipate and set free all and every one also Negroes now in their minority Edith James 13, David James 10, who I likewise emancipate yet I believe it right for me to reserve the prerogative of acting as guardian over them until the males arrive at 21 and females 18. Deed Book 14, 1784-1788 p.44, I Thomas Taurman of Goochland County being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do unto others as I should desire to be done in the like situation and having under my care a Negro man slave who I have hither held as a slave named Sam about fifty years of age I hereby emancipate him 10 July 1784. p.182, I Thomas Hutchins of Goochland county from a mature, deliberate consideration and being fully persuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and being willing to fulfill the injunction of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by doing to others as I would they do unto me do declare that having under my cear (sic) a Negro girl named Agga Scott (11 years old) for myself and my heirs release unto the said Agga Scott all my right tittle and claim or pretention of claim after she arrive to the age of 18 which will be 1792. 23 second month 1785. Deed Book 15, 1788-1791 p.263, I Joseph Pleasants of Goochland County believing that all men are by nature equally free and being in possession of sundry Negroes do therefore manumit and release all my right and title to the following Negroes. To wit, Jude (42), Fanny (35), Silvia Sr. (33) Silvia Jr. (20), Lewis (11), Charlotte (8), Andrew (6), Jack (4), Winney (4), Sall (2), Dick (1), Isaac (1), Nanny (1). Lewis, Andrew, Jack, Dick and Isaac to be free so soon as they arrive to the age of twenty one. Charlotte, Winny, Sall and Nanny at the age of eighteen. 8th day 12th month 1788. Proved 15 December 1788 further proved by James Hunnicutt 20 July 1789. Deed Book 16, 1791-1795 p.147, I Roger Cooper (Blacksmith) of the County of Goochland having a rightful property in a Negro woman by the name Clarissa about twenty four years who I solmeny entered into marriage with several years ago, and now I have by the said Clarissa several children to wit Agnes aged five years old 22 July next and John Cooper aged two the 21 December last. For the love and affection I have for my aforesaid wife and children, I do hereby emancipate them.... 12 February 1793. p.244, I George Webb do hereby emancipate and set free a Mulattoe woman named Betty at present my slave. 16 December 1793. p252, I Paul Meatchum for divers causes and considerations have and do by these presents liberate and emancipate my negro man Harry and do vest him with all the rights, privileges and immunities of a free born citizen. 22 August 1793. p.287, I Thomas Massie of the county of Goochland emancipate my man slave named James alias James Barrett. 21 April 1794. p.288, I Ursula Mosby of the county of Goochland believing that all men have an equal and just right to freedom and having in my possession the following slaves, to wit Brisco (35) Sam (34), Abram (25), Henry (23) Barlet (16), Fanny (15), Hanna (13), Amey (12), Dicey (11), Jack (11), Rhoda (8), Beck (8), Moses (7), David (4-5), Frank (4), Jordan (9) and Isaac (4 months) the males at age twenty one and the females at age eighteen. 12 sixth month 1794. Ursula x Mosby 16 June 1794. p.416, I Elizabeth Tucker Pleasants of Goochland having in my possession a negro boy named Cupid Dean aged fourteen years and believing that all mankind have a natural, inherent right to freedom, I do hereby emancipate and set free the aforesaid Cupid Dean when he shall arrive to the age of twenty one. 20th second month 1794. p.446, I Titus Freeman of Goochland County (a "free Negroe" taxable from 1783 to 1796) for good consideration me thereto moving do voluntarily and freely manumit my negro woman slave Molly alias Molly Freeman. 15 July 1795. Titus x Freeman. Orders 1791-4, p.432-3, 15 January 1794, Examination of Bridget Cooper, a free negro, charged with murdering her bastard child 23 December last.... Cloe the mother of the prisoner...Clarissa a sister of the prisoner. Witnesses to appear in Richmond: Becca Cooper, Nancy Cooper and Janey Watkins (free negroes). Orders 1795-7, p.52, 20 April 1795, Overseers of the Poor bind the following negro children of Nancy Cooper: Sally (7), Sam (5), Pegg (3) and Allen (1) to Thomas Pleasants. p.121, 20 July 1795, Overseers of the poor bind Betty, daughter of Phillis one of the negroes set free by Benjamin Watkins, to Sally Watkins. p.165, 21 September 1795, the Last will of Tucker Woodson, deceased, is presented in Court. Then Mary Pollock and Margaret Payne made oath that the testator declared the 18 May 1795 that the children of Milley by the names of Jack and Suckey, born slaves...should be free at his death. p.185, Overseers of the Poor bind John and Joe children of Sylvia; Nancy, Diana and Becky children of Daphne Cooper; Sally and Catherine children of Averilla Cooper.
